  • Oh right, hotel = free toothbrush land.

You forgot your toothbrush?! OMG, stop the world!! Old biddy might not be able to brush her teeth one night!! Its entirely possible that the world might explode tomorrow because of it.

No, ma'am, I don't have any COMPLIMENTARY toothbrushes. We are out.

No ma'am, nowhere in the Bill of Rights is there a free toothbrush at a hotel clause, we try to provide those things as a courtesy, but nowhere in hotel amenities is listed "free toothbrush." Yes, our sundry shop DOES have some for sale... no they are not for $.50 each. That is less than we bought them for. If you don't like the price you don't need one of my toothbrushes, you can walk to the supermarket next door and buy your own, for about the same price.

Yes ma'am, it is ridiculous that we don't have free dental cleaning supplies. Why don't we just bring a dental hygienist in just for you and have her clean your teeth all proper like?

Wait, you're getting all huffy with me? Let me check... nope still out. Maybe you should try stomping around a bit... Nope... still don't have any. Its strange, because usually that works doesn't it?

You know, I could at least understand her irritation -- if not her behaviour -- if your hotel was on the highway somewhere, with nary a store for miles ... but with a supermarket next door ...

Geesh. the last time I forgot my tooth brush, I just scrubbed my teeth with a damp washcloth, ate a breath mint, and I was good to go.

I dunno... I'd be irritated with myself for not having brought my own toothbrush. Expecting someone else to provide a FREE one for me BECAUSE I forgot... just seems a bit EW-ish to me.

(Especially since I DO have real toothbrushes (non-disposable ones) that are only $2 in the little shop we have here. I'd have gladly sold her one of those.)

No toothbrushes at my motel, either. You can buy a little disposable one with a tiny packet of toothpaste in the vending machine for $2.25....or you can go across the street and get a real toothbrush and a full-size tube of paste, and still probably have it come out to less. But yeah, no freebies in that department. (We don't even have the little shampoo bottles here...just soap.)

Even in posh suites, I have never seen free toothbrushes. Toothpaste samples packets in some places but never toothbrushes.

The hotel sundry store (or vending machine) or a nearby mega-mart sounds quite reasonable. But then, we are talking about SC's.

High end hotels, tend to have free toothbrushes and other oft forgotten toiletries that they'll provide if asked for. However they are not advertised, guaranteed or anything other than a helpful bonus.

I buy those 16 packs of those disposable travel toothbrushes (they really aren't that great, but they make your breath smell good and get the fuzzies off your teeth, so they'll do), and I always toss one or two in my purse and keep them there in case I won't be home that night.

That, and I always have makeup remover cloths.

That's kind of what I meant...not there alongside the shampoo, conditioner and soap.

Maybe instead, your hotel could provide a free dental exam. Make the guy look like the proctologist in "Cannonball Run", and make the drill extra noisy and have a slightly chugging motor. In the middle of the exam, have him say "I also do pap smears..."

If you did have any, she probably would have demanded an electric one because the regular ones aren't good enough for her.

It seems to me that the mid-range hotels are most likely to not have that type of things. I stayed at a Red Roof inn for $40 where I was asked at check-in if I needed any toiletries (which I did-I had forgotten my razor and was planning to find a convenience store). That said, I certainly wouldn't have demanded it. I always view it as a pleasant surprise.

don't know about your hotel in particular, and I've never taken advantage of such programs, but most hotels i've stayed in have signs in the bathrooms to the effect of "forgot a common toiletry item? call the desk and we'll provide one for you". they typically don't state any charge for these items... which implies they might be free.

still nothing to get all EW and pissy over.

Would that not lead to the assumption that if the hotel/motel/love shack that you are staying at does not have a little sign, then those things are not available?

I mean, it's one thing to inquire, that's reasonable. Once the answer is no then opens the vast wormhole of SCness that some resist, and some willingly plow into like Dr. Tolian Soran and The Ribbon entryway to the Nexus.

It's so I can get ideas out of my head, I decided to put it in a blog in case people are bored or are curious as to the (many) things in progress.

My hotel has free toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, deodorant, razors, shave cream, combs and sewing kits. I've had people get snippy because we do not have free contact lens solution, hair gel or sun screen. The sun screen request I thought was a bit unreasonable. We have one family of four that stays with us every couple months and every time they stay they always get multiples of all or free stuff. Guess they think it's part of the room like the free breakfast.
