It's amazing how businesses are blurring the lines between your property and your work. I'm waiting for the day when reporters will have to have their own computers. Many places already expect you to have your own photo equipment ... and they don't necessarily pay for maintenance and on-the-job damages.
A few reporters I know are paid per article and have to use their own equipment. At my last job (in public relations) we had to use all our own equipment. It was awful!

Turns out she knows who the customer is - and yes, he's local.

Nine phone calls and four texts, the final toll turned out to be.
      Seshat's self-help guide:
      1. Would you rather be right, or get the result you want?
      2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
      3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
      4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.

And he still probably can't figure out why. I hope your wife gave him both barrels before firing him.

Had an eBay customer call and wake us up at 4:30 AM. Luckily the answering machine picked up before we did (lucky for him, anyway; I'm not terribly polite early in the morning!) He was two time zones east, but still, time zones are not a new or incomprehensible thing. (Why he couldn't have e-mailed us instead, I have no idea.) And who's open at that hour anyway?! You wait until the business is likely to be open (as in, no earlier than 8 AM) before you call!

you know... this is why when my supervisor at the old job wanted me to text a customer I balked.
Sure, boss, let me borrow your phone for a minute...

I once had a customer repeatedly call my cell phone to make different changes to her account. She was also trying to set up a deal with us for the local school district (she was the superintendent at the time). The final straw was when she called me at home at 8AM on a Sunday morning (also during a holiday weekend) with some really inane question. I told her, "Never call my personal cell phone again...you can call our office number if you need to get a hold of someone," and hung up on her. That was the end of that, thankfully.

That is truly pathetic, that it has trickled down to the school system.

That's been going on for years around here. One teacher I know said each teacher in his school was given $200 to use for additional supplies (books were supplied by the school system). That $200 was supposed to last for the entire school year. Most teachers ended up digging into their own pockets for extra stuff. He's retired now but this was standard practice every year.
When you start at zero, everything's progress.

This is probably crossing over into fratching but it has trickled down for a while.
