Yesterday, in the middle of my shift, we had a thunderstorm. Soon afterwards, the electricity went out, and the store was running on the generator, meaning more than half the lights are out, and most, if not all, of the refrigeration is off.
Of course, none of this keeps the store from closing, or the customers from coming in. After about half an hour, they have cartboys posted by the enterance, telling customers that there is a power outage, can't buy anything from dairy, deli, hot foods or frozen, blah blah blah. OF COURSE, the registers still work...maybe cash only, maybe CCs and debits can go through, but I wasn't sure.
When I went outside for a smokey treat, I saw more than one customer get out of their car, walk towards the store and ask, "Why are the lights out?" Well, sir/ma'am, there WAS a thunderstorm, and the main transformer in {nearby town} blew.
Winning question of the night, and heard many more times than just once, btw..."Why are the lights out? It's sunny out!"
One winner came in, and after hearing that most of the perishables would be unavailable for his buying pleasure said, "That ridiculous!!!!! When the power goes out at home, things are still good after the power's been out for 20 hours!!!!!!!"
I heard him (not that it was hard to, he was talking rather loudly), and said, "Well, sir, we'd rather be safe than sorry, since a lot of our perishable items are not in enclosed cases." "I think you're being TOO safe!!!!!!!" "Well, sir, that is your opinion, but we'd really rather not take the chance of customers buying items that might not be at their best, so we're making these items unavailable for health reasons." On and on he goes, and I manage to run away and hide when he looks away for a second.
Our customers can be some of the biggest losers, I swear.
