SC writes a check to a big box store for the purchase of a digital camera, to the tune of $200. SC takes camera home, unpacks it, and decides he doesn't like it. SC returns to store to return the camera (at least 2 days later). Clerk sees that the camera's been opened and offers store credit. SC flips, says he'll just stop payment on the check. Leaves camera at store.
SC comes into my bank. Talks to one of the tellers. Teller looks at account and sees that the check has already cleared. Teller informs SC that we can't do a stop payments. SC leaves in a huff.
SC calls store, demands they give him his money back. Store again offers store credit.
SC comes back into the bank. Talks to me (apparently thinking that he'll get a different answer). I tell him we can't do a stop payment on a check that's already cleared his account. I try to tell him that store credit is better than nothing.
"I don't want store credit. There's nothing in that store that I want for $200. I guess I'm out $200." SC stomps out of the bank.
Minor epilogue: I'm glad he didn't request that we return the check as fraudulent. We couldn't have, but it would have taken some time to explain why to a grumpy customer.
I still don't understand why he didn't take the store credit. He could have bought groceries, household goods, or even clothes with it, if he didn't want any other electronics.
