  • One Little Comment

My bookstore is constantly short-staffed, and one night last week I was stuck alone at the register with a line of approximately 5 million people.

A couple people made snide comments about how I needed to get more help (to which I replied "If there was anyone for me to get, I would."). In the middle of the rush this gentleman came up and commented that we seemed short-handed. I waited for the complaint...

And he said, "I think you're doing a wonderful job handling the crowd and staying calm."

I could have hugged him. Sometimes a little comment like that can turn the whole day around.

In my industry, we don't often get customer interaction except complaints e-mailed in from building users.

However, I have had, on at least 2 different occasions, people come up to me and just say "Thank you, you're doing a wonderful job." That does more to keep you going than people seem to understand, or they would say it more.
