  • Gonna upgrade to Vista.....

And so the saga continues with...

Mr. Gonna upgrade to Vista ultimate because his son works for M$ & he can get it free...yippee for him

Downside...Mr. Idiot is running an 850 Mhz Duron with 512 RAM on a K7S5A board (Ver 3.1)...

Needless to say I tried to dissuade him, but of course, it says minimum sys reqs for Vista are 1 Ghz. and this git wants to try VISTA ULTIMATE !! Sooo...yes we do have a newer CPU for his board (1400 Athlon ) & a 512 PC 2700 stick for him.... Used

Well I sold him the gear, of course they didn't work ( consignment junk ) & I gave him his money back, tried , pleaded with him not to try the install. To no avail.

That's it...Don't listen to the stupid computer dum-dum man. He doesn't know anything at all. Bill Gates wouldn't lie to me. My son works for him.

He is gonna hate his son

*Dusts hands & wanders into the tech room to hide & sip an iced tea*

PS: Thanks to crappy AC the front part of our shop was about 30 C or 90 F by the end of the day....Hence my grumpiness.

      Side note;

I'm running an Athlon 64 4000+, A8V deluxe board, 2 Gb RAM, 7600GS (AGP) with about 1 Tb of storage & am not even FATHOMING the idea of installing Vista yet...

        In writting

That is why at the computer store here I worked, we insisted on writting comments like that onto the sales/repair slip. Most times the customer was so cocky they did not object to us writing a comment.

If they did object, then we would ask why they are buying something we say will not work, and that there will be no refunds on software and a restocking fee on hardware. That way we always came out ahead.

I run an Athlon 64 3500+ on a K8V SE Deluxe board, 4gb of RAM*, nVidia GeForce 7800 GS graphics, with a seperate 40gb physical drive set aside from my RAID just for the OS and other essentials (WinRAR, Foxfire, drivers, etc), and I'M not about to touch Vista with a 10 foot pole until they work out a way to make it stop reacting like it's on sedatives.

I really just don't get people who go swim with Egyptian crocodiles whenever someone tells them their system can't handle something.

*Sigh* Seen this before too, with Windows XP. Some fool would have a creaky old Windows ME machine, Upgraded from Windows 98, and would be more suited to running Windows 95. And they dump an XP upgrade on top of it.

Surprise, surprise, it BREAKS. The upgrade from Windows ME or 98 to XP is a horrible horrible thing, better to buy a full copy of XP, wipe your HD clean and completely reinstall. Or better yet, buy a new computer.

People don't seem to understand that computers aren't like fine wine. They don't get better with age. After 2 years, your computer is OUTDATED. After 4 years it's OBSOLETE. After 6 years, it's A PAPERWEIGHT. If you wanna run the latest and greatest software, you'll need the latest and greatest computer to run it. If you don't need the latest and greatest computer... chances are you don't need the latest and greatest software either.

I take exception to the PAPERWEIGHT. My 486 still runs all my nice software game collection I have. Which todays computers would choke on. Yes, I know you can load up your computer with all kinds of slow-downs and emulators to get them working. But it's just easier to fire up the PAPERWEIGHT

I kind of resent that also. My ex-husband built my current (defunct) computer in 2000. It's 2007. This is the first time I've EVER had a problem with the machine. First, my hard drive died, which is sucky, but easily repaired. Popped a new hard drive in, and it's running smooth as silk again, until I discovered uTorrent. *sigh* Since I discovered uTorrent, I've been leaving my computer on all night instead of shutting it down like I normally would (the noise keeps me up).

Well, one night we had a thunderstorm, and I had left the machine on, and *poof* next morning, it was dead. *cry*

7 year old computer, worked PERFECTLY WELL until I was careless and fried it. Paperweight? I think not :P (this was originally a Win98 machine that we upgraded to WinXP Pro as soon as we could get a copy).

I have a desktop out in the building that resents the "paperweight" comment.

She's a 7 year old Gateway 500MH PIII w/64 MB Ram and runs 98se. She was running ME for a pretty good while, then I made the mistake of adding on Spybot, which screwed it up good.

I could still run ME on it, but I detest that OS as whole more so than I do 98. If I can get more memory and a faster processor, I may put XP on it one day and try that out.

And if it breaks, that's okay. I still have the laptop and am still planning to buy a new desktop next year anyway.

Bah! I really only meant my comment in terms of useful ability to run current software.

I had a C64 for the longest time... kept it and used it for nearly 10 years, so I know a computer's useful lifespan is far longer than the software is written it can use. But when a customer comes to me with a computer with Windows 98, the base installed RAM, and a processor that was pokey when it was NEW, and they want to install the latest and greatest software on it... it just makes me wanna cry.

Especially when the only reason they WANT said latest and greatest software is because an ad told them they did.

(I personally wouldn't mind an older laptop to replace my poor, dead motherboard iBook. As long as it can do web browsing, has word processing and has SOMEPLACE to put a wireless card, like a PCMCIA slot, I'm happy)

I have vista on my dual core machine w/2 gigs of RAM. It runs great, it looks purty, and is quite smooth.

It just doesn't DO anything. So I dual boot to XP if I want to get anything done.

                        *dons flame-retardant suit*

                        I actually quite like Vista

I don't use it regularly, so I can't comment on how one lives with it, but when I tried it on a reasonably well-specced machine it ran well, looked very nice, and had even obviously fixed a few of my main XP complaints. Certainly if I need a new machine I won't cry about the fact that it comes with Vista...

Office 2007 is another matter though... I cannot for the life of me figure out how I lived without it. It is... wow. The new interface was confusing... for about 10 seconds. Already I find that I'm just knowing where things are, and there are so many new and or improved features. Seriously, every time I use Office 2003 I'm struck by how cluttered and directionless the UI is. Best money I've ever spent on software (oh, well, Adobe CS3 would come close, except I'd never be able to pay for that. Thanks, <school>.)
I think, therefore I am. But I am micromanaged, therefore I am not.

I think old machines aren't paperweights if you have someone who actually knows something about computers using it. To your average SC, old machines are paperweights but then again so are their nice new ones they hooked up to the internet without firewalls and anti-virus software
