You can turn on a pc remotely its called (WOE) wake on Ethernet or (WOL) wake on lan. This also applies to wireless to.

I do this with my home server all the time(save money/power) how ether you need the mac address and local ip adress first so the cracker(hacker is a Hollywood term they are actually something completely different) would have to have been in or at your pc when it was on.

WOE/WOL will only work on newer computers and you have to turn it on in the bios first.

I wouldn't use cracker. It may be technically correct, but it is not as well known as hacker, so people are more likely to mistake what you mean for the racially derogatory term.

The problem I had was that HP is willing to do this. True, it may not be a big deal for you to have this on a home machine, but HP wants to do this for businesses! Which means that some rogue employee could possibly steal that information, sell it to info thieves that would then crack the system and steal important information. Chances of that happening are still slim, but it's getting so easy to remotely connect into machines to get info like a local ip and mac addy... Either way, it's still going to be fairly uncomplicated for a hacker to obtain access.

Fortunately MY mom is smart enough to leave all the computer stuff to me without interference because she knows I'm great with it.

See, that's the thing. It was an older computer. I got it 2.5 years ago, and it was on the tail end of its shelf life. So I doubt it even had the option, and if it did, it certainly wasn't on.

And I know the proper term is cracker, however, like most other people, I promptly forget when talking with everyone else

              Uh, say again?

Thats a new one, the term 'Cracker' although known to some people as reference to the computer part is also a term of endearment as in
'She's a cracker' which would indicate that she is attractive.

Could someone PM me why its a racially derogitive please?

You'd be surprised the kinda of networks hackers will get into.

This was way back in the day when we had dial-up. We had 5 computers on our network, and were using a proxy server to connect them (I was maybe 10 or 12 at the time so memory is hazy.) To give you an idea of how old this network was: we were using coax cable rather than cat5.

Anyway, we were using a free version of this which only allowed 5 connections. I went to get on the computer and was getting an error trying to connect to the net. Went on the computer with the modem and the proxy to try and suss out what was happening (I was a net addict from way back), and noticed that there some connections coming from a source that were not 192.0.0.x

So, I yell for dad and show him what I saw. He immediate disconnects, and gets on the phone with the cops. Apparently we (as we found out a few weeks later) were in a chain of bounces that ended in the hackers trying to get into a government database (I can't recall which country, somewhere in Europe?).

So yea, small networks are great for hackers to try and cover their tracks.
