  • PST Files!

I hate PST files with a passion. If your running Office XP or less you have a 2 gig limit. You overfill them, then they will break. You put a damaged email in them, they will break. Recovery tools are not a 100%, and if they do work most of the time I need to truncate the PST file to make it work. This means you will lose emails no matter what.

SO DONT PUT IMPORTANT EMAILS THAT CAN NOT BE LOST IN A PST FILE.

I told you this many many times. So stop it, put a do not archive tag on any email you wana keep on the server.

Yes we do backups but only if you saved the PST file to the online drive. So there is no backup! Yes this is like the 5th time I told you this.

I don't care if you think I am being unhelpful. Go ahead tell my boss I can not magically fix all your problems and poop gold.

You just been added to the list! People on the list get the following benefits.

No after hours help! That's right you call me after 5:00 you get hit with the voicemail.

Lower priority on your help requests. So now you are last ass-munch.

No special favors! Personal computer not working, fuck off.

New new crap, tough! Hand me downs for life!

That's one of the things that used to drive me crazy when I worked the Help Desk for UPS. Constantly getting phone calls about Outlook issues related to the PST file. We'd have to run the Inbox Repair Tool and basically kill an hour waiting for it to finish and HOPE that it would resolve their issues. We had some employees that would have as many as 4 or 5 archive folders or additional PST files set up to manage all of the email that they just absolutely could NOT delete.

The bad thing about it all is that while the limit is 2GB, it's starts to go ape shit at around 1.4GB.

Yep. I had one do get corrupted at 1.3GB. Luckily I had a backup from the day before soo not too much mail was lost. We thankfully have moved from our old ISP hosted POP accounts to a web based (Google w/Postini) system.

My PST file pet peeve is the default creation folder.

We've lost two people's PST files just by not thinking to do look in that buried folder for PST files before a reformat. Now, we have to do a system wide search before reformatting.., after looking someone's VERY IMPORTANT PST file.

my airline has a fix for that, we create a messaging folder within the my docs folder to house any and all pst files, makes for much nicer repairs and backups.
