  • External HD issues.

I've just tried to use my external hd in my new computer for the first time. This is windows 7, previously used on XP home edition.

The computer doesn't recognise it, it has not the slightest clue it exists.

It's an iomega drive. Model MDHD320-U

Light is lit indicating power supply is ok, usb port it's connected to works fine with anything else. Definitely formatted for windows.

    I found this site: https://lenovo-na-en.custhelp.com/ap...tail/a_id/1235

but got out of my depth at step six

    *whimper*

Should i just continue slogging through those instructions or is there anything else i can try?

    Try the suggestions here:

barring that, if you don't need the data on the ext. hdd, maybe a repartitioning may be your best option.

Tried all of those, no joy

I'm going to take it to a friend's house later today and see if it will work on their machines, if so i'll dump the data to their hd, repartition, check it works on mine and then reupload my info. If it still isn't recognised at least my data's safe while i figure it out.

It looks like this is a cased drive where you can take the drive out of the case.

If it's a single HDD inside I'd suggest trying to hook it up directly to your computer - there's plenty of options of caseless connections.

my fav is "WiebeTech" brand connectors but they're not cheap. They're usually used for forensics but are open to the public too. My WT ultradock kit actually helped me access & transfer data (everything really) from a friend's drive that was no longer working. and that was the old style kit.

and of course there's other kits you can try too.

If all else fails i'll look into this but i'll avoid it if possible as it seems a bit more involved than i'd normally attempt.

          Thanks for the idea though

Just curious, as I've had an issue with printers not working for this reason --

Is the HD, by chance, connected to a USB hub? If so, is the hub Powered (does it plug into the wall)? Unpowered hubs, in my experience, are kvetchy about dealing with any devices that would normally require external power of some kind, including HD's, printers, and even some flash drives. Try plugging it directly into a USB port on the comp if so.

              Nope, not a hub.

Anyway, after driving myself neary batty trying to get it to work on my friend's computer we have determined that the USB cable is faulty. swapping out my cable for her printer cable resulted in her printer not registering with the computer.

They've loaned me a spare cable so i can get my data off the drive until a new cable arrives, assuming that was the only problem anyway.
