    Lesson to users here.

No mechanical part is safe. Electronic is a *bit* safer, just 0 & 1's, written by electricity levels. You don't have an arm to scratch a surface.

Get the drive back and see if you can extract ANYTHING from it. As a slave drive, not a boot drive.

    PM me.

He won't be able to get any data off if the head is damaged. Sorry to say this, but you are going to have to either bite the bullet and pay up or take it as a lesson learned. Or you can attempt to set up your own clean room and transfer the platters to another HD case with a working head.

That sounds like more hassle than it's worth. Sorry for the bad luck man.

Yeah, a really bad head isn't all that fun

Just chalk it up to bad luck, find the person who drop that hard-drive and beat him/her/it senseless.

Unless you're very lucky you might get very little back. And since luck isn't on your side, it probably be what you already got. So sorry for your bad luck.

I am beyond sorry to hear that. You got the worst possible failure mode you could get (short of some sort of explosion/fire). That drive is toast. They might manage to recover the data, and even a significant chunk of it, but the drive itself is dead and gone. It wouldn't voom if you put a million volts through it. It is an ex-drive.

Depending on the company, they'll get a fair amount of the data back. If the pictures are worth it to you, pay them their fee. If not... I'm sorry, I really am.

As to what is best? Let's put it this way: Banks use tape for backup and offline storage. They do so for a reason. It's expensive, but it's one of the most reliable methods for archiving your data and recovering it later.

Yes it's a sad day, but I'm coming to terms with it.

Right now I'm in contact with Western Digital at least trying to find out how to get them to replace it since it's only 4 months old and has a 3 year warranty.

              Oh btw gang, I'm female.

I don't believe that, you got pics to prove it

I'm only kidding Gatekeeper, I've figured it out a while back.

NP Lot. Just noticed a few messages referred to me in the masculine.
And can't you tell from my pic on the CS Album?
