I asked one of the techs at my school about anti virus protection and she mentioned AVG at http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Vir...-10320142.html. Has anyone had any expirience with this that can give their input?

From that thread, there's at least a few of us who use it. I know I like it. I've got the free version, and I've not had any issues, either when I was using XP, or on Vista.

I've been using it for the last 4 years or so and have been quite happy with it. Since I'm on DSL, I set it to update the definitions every night a 2:00AM and run a full scan every night at 3:00AM. If it misses an update (no connection or the machine was off, it automatically updates as soon as it can. I use it, I like it. It's comprehensive, covers viruses, trojans and some malware, and is also very easy to use.
Remember: NO software EVER will do EVERYTHING you want at one time. One brand may be really really good at catching Viruses. Another will be good at catching trojans. To combat this - you use a layered approach.
Layer your access to the internet by using firewalls (not the windows), routers, anti virus and common, frequent (weekly, or monthly) malware scans.

As with all AVS (anti virus software) be aware how it set up, I have my computer set to update every time the computer is connected to the internet, my mother on the other hand only updates about once a week or so... (we're both on AVG I've set it up slightly differently and belive I'm a lot more protected.
