I had a computer mysteriously start giving the "configuration has changed, hit <F1> to continue booting" message one day, for every boot. Nothing had changed, and I couldn't figure out why it would give the message. Several tech friends, including one who works as a white hat for a bank, could not figure it out either. One day, several months later it just as suddenly stopped. The computer still works, and is serving as a friend's temp computer until he can save up for a replacement.
