  • iexplore.exe overload

Last night I installed a ipod converter program and realplayer SP beta.

I noticed IE7 was acting weird, it would open iexplore.exe and when I closed IE iexplore.exe would stay up and running. I would have to ALT CTRL DEL it to make it stop.

I removed the ipod program and realplayer and it didn't help. I tried a System Restore to a few days ago, nothing. So I got the idea to just "upgrade" to IE8 in the hopes it would fix whatever was wrong. Big mistake. Now I end up wih 6 iexplore.exe's running because I like to open many tabs. Now some tabs do not close when I close them and when I cose IE8 I get 6 iexplore.exe sitting there running and have to close each one.

I do not have a restore disk so I guess its time to buy a new PC or buy a windows disk and reinstal. I am leaning towards a new PC since this one is a few years old. I don't have a restore disk because I bought this one from one of thoese "rent-to-own" stores. Its a Dell but I don't see a restore partition and no other way to do a restore without the disks. Anyone know if maybe its hidden? And if so how to do a restore?

    Before you resort to that.

Give us some background on your level of expertise (So we don't tell you too many things you already know. )

    Read this thread.

There's a very VERY good possibility you can be up and running better than before in just a few days with a little patience and NO MONEY spent.

Sorry worked 35 hours in the last 3 days.

I know enough to be dangerous.

I run Comodo on this PC. It has found a few things as I surf and I always click the remove button.

Ran a scan with Comodo and it found nothing.

I ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and it found 440+ cookies. Shouldn't Comodo have removed these? It always removes my useful cookies!

Spybot - Search & Destroy --- found nothing.
      Ad-Aware --- found nothing.
SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition found 3 things. Two files and one registry item. Removed.

I have tried Housecall and Panda online and have no answer as to if they found anything. I started one each night before work and when I got home the next day IE was frozen. Had to ALT CTRL DEL out of IE.

I have HijackThis if you would like a log...

Right now I have 7 svchost.exe running. I do not remeber so many running at once. I also have 5 iexplorer.exe running and if I close IE they stay running and I can not reopen IE until I ALT CTRL DEL and close them.

I wonder if there's something that's gone twitchy with IE recently.

Nekojin has been having problems with the damn thing siezing up on him at work this week.

Have you checked the odd entries on your HijackThis log against an HT forum? I have found a couple of problems (years ago) by running an HT log and then doing searches for the stuff I didn't recognize and seeing the answers people gave to other posters with the same problems.

I did some digging into this, and came across a few forms, including Microsofts Tech Net which suggested removing add-ons:

Try running IE8 with add-ons disabled.

Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No
Add-ons) to start IE8 without any add-ons. Try using the browser and see if
          the same problem arises.

If the problem does not occur again, start IE8 normally, go to Tools (if the
menu bar does not appear, hit the Alt key on the keyboard) > Manage Add-ons.
Disable all the add-ons under 'Toolbars and Extensions'. Enable each add-on
one at each time, restart and see if the problem occurs again. Once it occurs
again after enabling an add-on, you have nailed the culprit.
I figure it's at least worth a try. Perhaps the programs you installed didn't fully uninstall and that's what's causing the hanging.

Just a note: Nekojin doesn't have any add-ons with his installation of IE8 at work, and it was still giving him fits.

A tech support guy we have in house twice a week has mentioned that he doesn't know of many advanced sites that will even work right with it, and if you aren't requried by something to upgrade, to stick with 7. Since we don't use IE at all unless forced to, it's not much of an issue. Except that our bank requires one particular section of their site to be on IE8 and the entire rest of their site cannot be used in IE8. Just brilliant.
