If it was only the MBR that was corrupted, then everything else should be fine when you restore it.

well, I plugged in the hard drive last night, and now it's just giving me a corrupt system file message. I finally found and burned the XP home image, so as long as it's a clean image, I should be good.

Well, after much heartache and frustration with permissions, I used an Unbuntu live CD to recover his files.

I took the computer over.. and lo and behold, his internet connection had died while the computer was gone. Guess who got to call his ISP?

They scheduled a service call, and I ran away.

*snip* stick of bad RAM. One stick out of four. And his system wouldn't even beep with that one stick in.

Count your blessings. I had to troubleshoot a bad stick of RAM on a machine that would boot, run some things, and then shit the bed when the game it was bought to run was loaded after about 30 seconds. Talk about a nightmare...
