  • VOIP suggestions?

One of the people I work with is moving up to Seattle, WA (our company is in California). They're going to be working from home for at least the first 6 months, up to 1 year and then get moved into an office.

Boss wants me to get VOIP service for them so that they can have our area code phone number so that for our clients they don't feel that someone has moved (until they get a office and we then have a "presence" in the area).

I'm currently looking at Vonage and Ooma but I'm not really seeing a lot of good reviews of their products. This guy is a recruiter and makes at least 40 calls a day so I don't really want to be dealing with the system all the time. I believe he's going to have Comcast highspeed cable internet.

I'm wondering if anyone here has had personal experience/knowledge or has suggestions for me to try? I'd really appreciate any advice

I've been using Packet8, their price is acceptable and it hooks up to standard telephone equipment.

Is there some reason you can't just get them a cell phone? I've kept my 312 area code for over three years now up here in Wisconsin. Obviously pointless if they're expected to receive faxes, etc. Or maybe one of the 1-800 redirect services would work. Then customers would be none the wiser.

Supplementing his cell plan is an idea.

Boss wants to make sure that we can track what calls he's making (Recruiting is one of the industries where it's very easy to run two side businesses at the same time) and if he quits very suddenly I can cut his phone. (there are some trust issues and he's not always very honest about everything)

How about Skype (that is, SkypeIn)? I don't know how quickly you'd be able to shut it down, though.

We use LES.NET VoIP, you can configure a phone directly if you don't want to use a server, Grandstream GXP-2000's are what we have and a box acting as an Asterisk server, but we could set the phones directly if we wanted to.
