  • Synaptics Touchpad Conflict?

I've got an issue that kept me up all night last night, trying to fix. It's driving me crazy. Hopefully one of you have seen this before and can shed some light.

I've been working on a Compaq Presario 2170 notebook for the last few weeks. The HDD went bad and I had to replace it. For testing purposes, I installed my version of XP Pro on it and after downloading all of the proper drivers, everything was working fine.

I ordered the Restore CDs from Compaq/HP and got it on Saturday. The install went fine, no problems, but after about 30 seconds after logging into Windows, the touchpad stops working. If I navigate to the Mouse settings in the control panel and reset the settings, the touchpad starts working again until I reboot. Then it's the same thing, at the same point. If I reboot into safe mode, there are no problems.

I've downloaded the latest drivers form both the Compaq site as well as Synaptics. Still fails. I've upgraded the laptop from SP1 to SP3 and all other available Microsoft updates. Still fails at the same point.

Nothing extra or 3rd party appears to be loading at the time of failure and I can't find any settings in the control panel that would appear to be the cause of this. Only that reseting the confiugrations resolves it until it's restarted.

I haven't been able to find anything searching Google that solves it.

So, to recap... Touchpad works fine, allowing me to click on the login profile to use and continues to work until about 30 seconds after logging in. If I reset the mouse settings in the control panel, it works until I reboot again. It works fine in safe mode. Oh, the mouse buttons don't work either. It's as if the unit itself is disabled, but it's not.

Have any of you come across this before?

If you're also using an external mouse you might want to try uninstalling THAT or fiddling with it's settings. Laptops also sometimes have settings for the touchpad in the system BIOS. Perhaps if you could change a value there, it wouldn't be conflicting with whatever's deciding to take over from it.

If the touchpad REQUIRES an application to load (rather than just the driver), you might want to try a software trick to delay loading it. There's a nice freeware/opensource app that does nothing but add a delay before running things.

I can't think of anything else off the top of my head.

No external mouse, but things took an annoying turn.

I left the laptop running while I was at work to download and install a bunch of updates. When I got home, the touchpad wasn't even recognized by Windows anymore. Restarted a few times and tried reinstalling the drivers, but Windows still failed to recognize it. I shut the laptop down, removed the battery, and then went to bed. I was planning on tearing it apart in the morning to see if there was a problem with the FPC.

I forgot I was going to take it apart and powered it on in the morning. Windows recognized it and it was working without me having to do any kind of reset. Everything has been working fine since. No problems at all with it.

I hate it when crap like this happens

Problems that fix themselves are okay.... I just hate it when they leave me scratching my head without figuring anything out or making any sense. *blink*blink*
