I am really sorry if my post made you feel bad. It is not what I intended, and genuinely want to help. Besides, as someone who will occasionnally ransack my own appartment looking for my glasses when they're already on my nose, I know how you feel and can empathize. However, I didn't know how to put it without sounding like smartass, so I kept it as short and factual as I could. Sorry if if came across as offensive.
No ! I'm horrified you got that from what I said - I really really didn't mean to give that impression.

I do feel like a bit of an idiot but only because I am a bit of an idiot. And I find that quite amusing (because who isn't an idiot sometimes). I spend a lot of my time giving other people information, and while I try to remember every day that "ignorant" should not be an insult, it merely means someone needs some information they haven't got - I need regular reminders of my own foolishness.

(I'm never going to feel that bad as long as I'm learning something new. My theory is that today I may show my foolishness but the person who hides their mistakes today won't get the help, won't learn the lesson and will be making the same mistake tomorrow).

I was absolutely genuine in admiring your ability to see through the mistake I had made, and thinking that this made you a good potential teacher.

Thanks for the new suggestions. I'm not in the office again until Wednesday but I shall definitely try then. If I don't get my list I'll enjoy meddling and learning some new tricks.

    Thanks a lot.

Victoria J (whose ego really isn't that frail).

'/C:"EvilCompanyName"' defines what it is looking for
Should I assume this should be /S: in this case? Does VictoriaJ need the quotation marks around the search string?

        Indeed.

Nope, it's definitely '/C:' - this is the syntax for defining the search string for FINDSTR (cf. here), and dosn't have anything to do with the path to the files. I should have known this colon would be confusing.

And the quotations marks are indeed necessary, especially if the search string has several words ("Evil Company Name" as opposed to "EvilCompanyName"). However from my tests, if the words are separated with a new line / line feed / carriage return in the file, they won't count as a match.

Words on different lines because of word-wrapping should match without problem. I would still recommend searching for one very distinctive word. For example if the company is named "EvilCorp Collection Agency", I'd recommend searching for "EvilCorp", rather than "EvilCorp Collection Agency", unless this could result in unwanted matches.

          Yay for preemptive explanations!
