From what you're saying, you did not run the system recovery partition, but rather ran an installation from a Vista install disk. When you did so, you installed the new version of Windows into your recovery partition.

If you install Windows Vista over another windows install you will generally end up with a Windows.Old folder that houses the contents of the drive before the install.
