    One thing to check out is the "Application compatibility toolkit"
    This should be a free download from MS, and lets you create custom fixes for older apps etc (i.e. force to this resolution/colour depth, and many other options). I've use it a little bit for some apps/games, and got better results (Although not perfect) for older games (i.e. they actually RAN).

    Not sure if it is home/pro/ultimate specific.

      I'm pretty sure it doesn't work with Home Basic, which kinda puts him in the same spot.

      You really shouldn't be trying this kind of thing with such a crippled OS, but I understand, extenuating circumstances sometimes...
