  • Broke Student needs advice on a new computer

I'm not asking for donations, (unless you REALLY want to )

I'm trying to figure out which kind to get. I am a computer art major, so no matter what I get, I'm gonna wind up getting the Adobe Suite as well.

I like desktops, and PCs. I've heard dozens of rants for laptops and Macs (especially for the artsies) but I don't care. I like my windows 7 curse it, DON'T JUDGE ME!

anyway, I've been know to 'abuse' computers (forget to defrag regularly, occasionally visit questionable websites) but I was wondering what kind of stuff you guys would recommend?

I also need it to be relatively cheap and gonna last a while. I wouldn't mind buying parts and assembling myself. I haven't done it before, but I have a cousin (This one is real and certified) that can help.

You probably don't want to hear this, but for computer generated media (art, film, music) you would be better off with a Mac. Much as I like to raz on Apple products, their media creation suites are the top in the industry right now and you're going to see it a lot. Odds are pretty good you won't be able to avoid it, so might as well get into it.

The best news is that with their switch to Intel based CPU, there is software available to split the drive and install a Windows operating system, giving you the best of both worlds.

I don't recommend your building a system unless you've done it before, or have a friend who has done it by your side. I've worked on systems that amateurs have tried to build, and it has been painful. Shorted-out motherboards FTW.

That having been said, it *is* the least expensive way to get a power machine. Do NOT skimp on the RAM if you're doing artwork. 8 GB minimum.

CompUSA often has system builders' specials. Sign up to their email list for special deals.
