  • Quotation mark key help needed

I just got a new computer and things are okay, but I've got this major annoyance with the quotation mark key. The quotation mark won't appear on screen until the next character is struck; I hit the quotation key and get nothing, then I hit another key and I get the quotation mark, plus that key. An addition annoyance that I just found is this one: I was trying to type "o'clock", and got "oçlock". Additionally, while typing that last sentence I found the quotation mark + o produces "ö". This is an incredible annoyance for multiple reasons but mostly because I want to type what I am typing, not what some dumbass programmer thinks I wanted to type.

It's an HP computer running Windows 7 Home. I tried HP support, but their "support" is a forum that may or may not get you an answer, I had one other problem answered, this one was not. Any idea on how to get this thing working properly?

    It's selecting the French keyboard.

Start / Control Panel / Clock, Language & Region / Region & Language / Keyboards and Languages / Change Keyboards

    1. Then select the language you want under General. There's like a little bullet list under that, you can add/remove language. Remove French if you never use it.

    2. Or if you want to keep French, go under Advanced Key Settings / Change Key Sequence and then unassign the keyboard switch.

    3. Or do both. Avoids any accidental switch (like hitting ALT+Shift).

I did the second option since I live in Quebec. The "US" keyboard doesn't have that symbol delay like United States - International does.

I also have the keyboard on my taskbar so I can switch easily since I unassigned the keyboard switches.

    Hope that solves it.

Turns out we had the same problem with the keyboard on the family PC. I ran this trick and it worked like a charm.

FWIW, this is called "dead key" mode and is very common on non-English keyboards. To get the symbol by itself, press it and then Space.

More sophisticated systems (eg. Macs) include a preview of the character as it is built, when more than one keypress is needed. This requires that the text widget is properly integrated with the Input Method Engine, but it gives much more useful visual feedback to tell you what's going on.

THe setting for ours was "US + International".
