  • Virtumonde! How I hate thee!

I was just stricken with the wonderful huggy buggy pretty happy Virtumonde malware. I swear to god, killing this thing is like fighting the hydra. Nothing I do seems to do anything more than slow it down, and now it's bringing friends.

The best bit? I got it thanks to adobe acrobat... which I haven't used in years and forgot I even had on my home computer.

If I don't have much luck getting rid of it, I'm going to have to reformat, since the quarter just started back up and I'm not on campus enough to rely on one of their computers.

Anyway, just wanted to get the minor RAR ANGER off of my chest. Whoever made this thing deserves a brick upside the monitor...

i was able to kill it with malware bytes, along with spybot. both are free and most of the gurus on the site love it.

      Spybot is awesome.

If you can even turn the computer on, try swinging by bitdefender.com and running their free online scan. It should help to get rid of it. What virii it doesn't get rid of, you can generally find removal tools for.

        Thanks for the sympathy.

I'm getting some outside help, hopefully between them and my meager skills, we can put this hydra down. As long as I don't bump up against Monday, I'll be fine... but that's when I start to hit my time constraint due to classes.

I reallllly don't want to lose all my files.

Though that begs the question of whether it's safe to just offload them onto DVDs in case the 'kill it with fire' approach is required.

          Fixed your post.

And yes, I'm completely serious. (Had a malware crash last year that resulted in me having a minor nervous breakdown and my HD reformatted)

            Quick update:

With the help of the folk from the Spybot S&D forums, I appear to have slain the beast.

Though ironically, the last bits of infection caused by virtumonde appear to have been killed by the conficker check I ran today because, well, I'd been planning to run it today anyway, since it killed an obnoxious trojan virtumonde brought with it.
