  • Dropped cell in water. I suck. help...

Alright so about an hour ago I dropped my cell in water.
totally submerged for roughly... 5 seconds or so.

I took battery out after about 30 seconds (wasn't thinking about it at first just tryign to get cell dry ASAP).

Anyways. i'm wondering if this happened to anyone else and if they had to buy an entirely new cell (something I'm HOPING to avoid as this one cost around $250 and is only 6 months old) or if just the battery had to be replaced?

I'm at work right now be home in about 90 minutes and i'm going to try the rice trick (put it in a ziploc bag of rice to let the rice absorb moisture although i'm thinking it's probably screwed. I'm just hopin the SIM card can be saved as I honestly only know about... 3 people's phone numbers by heart. speed dial has killed my # retaining portion of my memory).

Any other suggestions on what to do?

    Thanks in advance.

make sure it's dry as possible before turning it off.

Considering you can put Keyboards through diswashers and have them still working as long as they're dry properly, you just might be ok.

well phone WAS off. (work in a hospital can't have it on @ work).

and before I took battery out it started vibrating on it's own (and yes power WAS off).

So I popped battery out and it's been sitting on the counter drying for about an hour now (little more).

later on today once I'm home and the cell store opens i"m gonna run over there and see if a new battery might be all I need.

I'd leave it as long as possible, overnight if you can before trying to put any battery in it, new or old.

I got mine VERY wet, not submerged but may as well have been, I left it for a few days as dismantled as possible without unscrewing bits I shouldn't and it came back to life. The screen was a bit weird for a week or so but it finally fully dried good as new. The sim card worked in another phone straight away.

Remove anything that you can without completely tearing it apart and put it in as dry as possible as you can with good airflow and leave it for a few days. DO NOT PUT ANY POWER TO IT AT THIS POINT. Just leave it alone. After a few days, check for any traces of water, shake the phone and listen for sloshing, etc. If you do not find any, put the battery and try it. Now this is not guaranteed, but it's your best bet.

Bowl of uncooked rice. That's supposed to dry out electronics.

                lordlundar's post, except:

Rotate it every so often as you let it dry so all six sides are facing up for a while. (Lets gravity move water out of recesses.) You DID remove the sim along with the battery already, right?

The vibrating may have just been a momentary short. Don't sweat it too much just yet.

                Good luck!

This along with the gravity bit. Also, it's going to take at least a day, more if you can spare it. Usually 48 hours is sufficient.

The phone is probably FUBAR'd, but, try the rice trick, i've had luck with that in the past. SIM cards are robust little buggers, though, so even if the phone is dead, the SIM card is probably alright.

What sort of phone are we talking about here?

Though I did once drop my iPod in a cup of Diet Coke. It stopped working after a bit and you could see the bubbles inside the screen. I let it sit with the plug end down on my dresser for about 2 weeks to dry. It's worked fine ever since.

I can't get at the SIM card without basically dismantelling the phone (which im not prepared to do).

Its a samsung u740 (one of those dual flip phones) w/the QWERTY keyboard when opened longways.

But yea i've got it in rice right now w/a fan blowing over it to help air flow and dry it out. also used a hair dryer when I got home from work this morning.

I'm gona leave it till friday and then take it into the store (if it wont power on/work for me).

I'm HOPING against hope that at worst just the battery is messed up cuz that'll only cost me $100. as oppose to like $350 for the phone.

The rice trick definitely works. My Ipod got dunked a few months ago and I left it in a baggie of rice for a bit. No issues since....1g Shuffle.

Err, that was probably a bad idea. Hair dryers get really hot, so you've introduced the possibility of expansion cracks now, with dry parts expanding and cracking when the wet parts don't move the same. "Thermal shock" is the closest concept.
