  • On Friday, my best friend and I went out into the city for the Winterfestival, and while there, we tasted Pichlers Tiroler Gluhwein. Now, I've wanted to know what mulled wine tastes like since I was about 8 and read about it in a novel. This tasted sooo much better than I was expecting! I don't like the oaky finish of red wines, so I was glad that the spices cancelled it out. I don't know what wine they mixed it with, I meant to ask on our way out but I got distracted by the Hare Krishnas dancing past us, the subsequent religious debate and so forgot.

    Tasting notes -
Scent: Smelt like cinnamon sugar on buttery toast.
First sip: A tiny mouthful, because it was very hot. Sweet and slightly spicy, reminded me of apple pie.
Larger slurp: Oh wow! This is gorgeous! Sweet, spicy and warming apple pie flavour with very subtle orange peel notes and a smooth finish. Like a mouthful of Christmas.
Rating: 9/10, definitely going to buy a bottle of the syrup off their site and experiment with it.
Don't tempt pixies, it never ends well.

    • Ironically tried a mead yesterday. Well, more accurately, my friends got a bottle of mead at the P, and I tried some of it. And as much as I like mead, this one just didn't do it for me. They loved it, but for me, it just missed the mark.

Myself, after a lovely St. Martin's Triple, I had an Old Chub from Oskar Blues. They call it a Scottish ale, and I don't know much about Scottish ales, but this one is beautiful. Deep, rich, tasty, full-flavored. Other than Ten Fidy, it is my favorite offering from Oskar Blues. I'd give it an 8. Just a gorgeous beer.

And yes, it comes in a can. Just like screw-cap wines, this is no longer automatically a bad thing. Ain't technology wonderful?

      • Making low carb tiramisu for my birthday (and if anyone's read my Twitter knows that I need something to look forward to) and want to know what's a decent sweet Marsala for a medium range price? $10 or so. I can go higher (hell s'my birthday and I want this cake to be epic) I just want a starting point.

Also, what's a decent wine to pair with tuna or seafood cioppino? Not a drinker so I'm sort of lost here. I might not drink the wine but I'll use it to cook with. (I heard that if you wouldn't drink it, don't cook with it. Since I don't drink, I see no problems cooking with it.)

        • Yesterday I took a tour of the second oldest family run brewery in the US - Schell Brewery in New Ulm, MN. It was a fun tour seeing the original buildings still in use, and some of the original equipment in use. At the end of the tour we got to sample some of the beers, and they were all delicious. Something I found out on the tour - the Schell's Stag Series of beers were only produced in very limited quantities. So as soon as I got home, I bought 2 6 packs of the Stag Series # 3 - Rauchbier. It is so delicious, and I think I've even mentioned it here before. It's got a smoky flavor to it which really makes the beer. It was expensive ($10 for a 6 pack), but totally worth it.

          • Hubby hasn't made these in a while but we have a favorite shot called a Beam Me Up Scotty.

Basically you layer Kahlua, Bailey's, and banana liqueur, starting with the heaviest (I think it's Kahula?) and then pouring the other layers over the back of a spoon into the glass. Yummy, fun, and sure to get you completely shitfaced in a hurry.

            • Right, I need something from this place now.

Couple of weeks I'm going floatin' down a river for a couple of days. Fun times, nothing quite like it. But I want a really good "sittin in the sweltering sun" beer to counteract that crap I know everyone else is gonna bring, even if only a six pack.

So I finally tried the Belhaven Twisted Thistle IPA - and i gotta say, I understand where Jester's coming from on the preference away from IPA's...

First sniff: Like the sickly sweet of a freshly killed Skunk....
                first sip: bitter and perfume-y
second sip: wow - that's really not my friend....
                thir'...oh right there was no more drinking that - I tried to pawn it off on other people, and it didn't work;

turns out that since i REALLY like caramel, I probably prefer maltier beers, as opposed to hoppy ones...

                good to know...

Thankee, but I must ask - is this particularly sweet? Most "fruit" beers I've had except for two were far too sweet for me (both were Sam Adams, Cherry and Cranberry). I'm more of a bitter sort of a dude.

(hah, would my wife ever agree with THAT).

                  • I don't find it sweet - others have...

I don't know how to describe it - Its not overwhelmingly blueberry, not super sweet, gets more in the "bitter" zone the warmer it gets....

Amusingly, some of the worst beers are some of the best ones to have for a hot day. As much as I would rather drink a Sam Adams Boston Lager to a Bud in general, if I'm out and it's hot and sweaty, the Bud just flows more smoothly.

That being said, here are some other options besides the Usual Suspects:

Corona is obvious, but there are some similarly-styled Mexican beer that are far superior. Such as Pacifico, Bohemia (the Mexican one, there are two Bohemias), and sometimes even Tecate. Some people also like Kalik (from the Bahamas), but whatever you do, avoid Caribe like the plague that it is. Horrible, horrible beer.

Also, Woodchuck Pear Cider is a great light, refreshing, thirst-quenching beverage that is not the usual swill.

Magic Hat #9 is a nice offering as well.

As silly as it sounds, Smirnoff Ice and Mike's Hard Lemonade (and their various flavors) are great for this kind of thing.

I am not a huge fan of it, but a lot of people like Stella Artois (Belgium) as a light alternative to the usual swill. It's not bad, it's just not my personal cup of beer.

Blue Moon, Shock Top, or Bell's Oberon, all wheat/white beers, might fit your bill. Light, flavorful, wheaty, but still good on a hot day. In the same vein, you might enjoy a nice hefeweizen, such as Hacker-Pschorr, Tucher, or Franziskaner.

Red Stripe (Jamaica) is simply delicious, and does not get horrible to drink when it warms up, but is also not a dark beer that is just not palatable in the heat.

Some other good alternatives (that might be harder to find) include Lost Coast Great White, Sir Perry's Sparkling Pear Cider, Brooklyn-Schneider Hopfen-Weisse, Tucher Kristall Weizen (a bit different from their normal hefeweizen), or maybe even Fat Cat Lager.

Remember, the key to good beers when you're hot and sweaty is to keep it light! As much as I love Guinness, it would not be a good choice for when you're out in the sun sweating your ass off. It just doesn't taste right in that situation, in my personal opinion. Sun + sweaty = light, not dark.

Probably true. If you can, try to get a hold of some Left Hand Milk Stout. I think you'll love it! Not only is it dark and malty, it definitely has hints of caramel.

                        • Ok, Woodchuck makes a LOT of good apple based hard ciders; however if you want a good Pear, go with ACE

for something light/slightly fruity, and not too sweet, go with the Granny Smith

( I have tried Woodchuck's Pear, and Ace's Apple, and the general consensus is that Ace should stick to Pear, and Woodchuck should stick w/ apples - and neither needs to do the Raspberry one)

                          • I have to second Jester's recommendation for Mike's Hard Lemonade/Smirnoff. Yeah, it's bitch beer and a lot of sugar, but nice for a hot day and a mild buzz. Also, anyone who's looking for a good summertime mixed drink: Sweet Tea Vodka and Lemonade. And this is from someone who doesn't even like vodka.

                            • I completely get about the Guinness on a hot day thing. Learned that a few weeks back with the Bells Double Cream Stout on a 90+ degree day...

I might see if I can find a good supply of Peroni, now that I've got the lighter is better suggestion. Always liked it with Italian food for exactly that reason.
