  • Dehydrated chicken

When boneless & skinless chicken breast is on sale I'll but *a lot* of it to ake dehydrated chicken. While I don't mind it soft I have it in the dehydrator until it is crispy (mainly because it keeps better like that and is easier to break into smaller pieces for dog training).

I started it last night and this morning it was edible (cooked). That was only 12 hours. Normally we leave it in for 36-49 hours.

There's one slight problem with having cooked dehydrated chicken in the dehydrator for 4-36 hours...

We take pieces out to eat.

I think 1/4 of it is already gone. Luckily I bought enough for 2 batches.

That actually sounds like a really good snack.

They are a great snack and make excellent dog training treats. You can much on them and give them to the dog (or bit off a piece to give them). While they should be refrigerated, they can stay out a very long time and still stay good and not get slimey like some treats (hot dogs, cheese).

They're very easy to make, too.

Get boneless / skinless chicken (breast is the best part to use), wash it off, either cut it into strips or leave it while (we cut it into strips - easier to portion plus it cooks faster) and throw in the dehydrator for 36-48 hours (although you can start to snack on it after 12-16 hours).

        It comes out really crispy.

It's far cheaper than many snacks (human and canine) and quite healthy.

We used to have an old one that had the heating coils at the bottom - I hated it because it was a pain to clean. So, a few years ago my sister got me one for Christmas (one very similar to this one: http://www.amazon.com/Nesco-FD-75PR-...2477720&sr=8-1) and it's been great. The heater is on the top and it has a fan that blows it down to the bottom - just make sure it has ventilation. You can also get extra trays (I didn't) for more dehydrated goodness in one shot. For $50 it's well worth it.

It is one of the 3 appliances I use a handful of times a year yet I am so glad I have it (the other two being the George Foreman rotisserie and the bread machine).
