  • Let's try this again indeed

Hope the new year is turning out well for everybody. Sorry for my long absence; there's been a lot going on. Among other things, there were some health issues, but more importantly, I lost my last cat (Fuzzy Pumpkin) back in February (on Valentine's Day, no less! ) and was cat-less for six months -- first time in decades I have had no cats.

Then on impulse I walked into a store that hosts rescues and asked if they had any seniors cats. They said they *had* had a bonded pair (not littermates) but they'd been moved to a different store.

Long story short, I took them in. They are one of THE most timid and skittish pairs of cats I have ever encountered. They seem to be coming around, albeit very slowly. I don't know if there were ferals, or if they were abused, or what. The only thing I do know is that the rescue had been looking for a home for this pair for FOUR YEARS. And they're not exactly senior, they are 4 and 5 years old respectively! (Some supporter of the rescue had in fact paid the adoption fees for both because they'd been waiting so long!)

In short, they're not what I wanted (I wanted something more along the lines of friendly and affectionate Fuzzy Pumpkin), but they are what I got. It's going to be a challenge, but they are here to stay.

I'd post a photo but I can't figure out how, alas.

Welcome back, and thank you for giving those two a home! I hope they turn out to be the biggest lap-cats ever!!

The other, of course, involves orcs." -- John Rogers

WB and good job on the Gotcha for those lucky kitties. I'm sure you'll give them the wonderful, loving home that they need.

There is no sign at all that they are going to be lap kitties ... they are the most timid, skittish cats I've ever had.

In fact they are the strangest cats I've ever encountered, period. They have zero interest in catnip (although my last two were the same.) They don't like cat grass -- I bought a pot of it and it died an unnatural death. Previous cats have always nibbled it down to the earth. They have no idea what to do with cat toys.

And picking them up is absolutely verboten. You attempt that at peril of life and limb. Which means I can't trim their claws. Which means I either have to drag them to the vet (oh yay) or get a professional in to do the job.

Oddly, the female (Mittens, a/k/a Squeaker of the House) was described on her paperwork as "very shy." But she is the one who is coming around the fastest.

The ginger, Alfredo, is the one who still ducks and runs when I come anywhere near him. No idea why somebody named him "Alfredo", given his colour, he should've been named "Marinara" or something.

Also, when I finally got around to actually reading their paperwork, I discovered Mittens has almost no teeth left. In her upper jaw, she has one canine and (I think) four of those little tiny front teeth. Her lower jaw contains both canines and (I think) all of those little tiny front teeth. Of the rest of the teeth she used to have, about half of them fell out before she was taken into care; the rest had to be removed once the vet got a good look at them. But she still scarfs down her dry kibble with no problem. (They get dry kibble in the morning and canned food at night.)

Nope. I'm not seeing it. Could it be that I'm working off a Mac Mini?

All I see there is "Cancel" and "Preview" and "Post Reply."
