  • Too heavy for a thief to lift!

Yesterday The Don and I sold a small safe to guy. Like most of the safes we sell, it includes a bolt down kit so you can bolt the safe to floor to prevent a thief from just picking up the entire safe and taking it someplace where it can be broken open or picked at his leisure. This was all explained to the customer and he seemed to understand, so I wheeled the safe up to the register then out to his car.

Right after I picked the safe up and put it in his car (it was 87 pounds) he asked me again if everything was in the box.

Me: Yes. The manual, the card with the combination, and the bolt-down kit are all in there.

Cust: You know, I really don't think I need to bolt it down. How much did you say it weighs?

    Me: About 90 pounds.

Cust: That's probably too heavy for anyone to pick up and take away.

Me: Sir, I just picked it up and put it in your car. If I can do that, then a thief can do it. If you're going to store anything in there that you can't afford to lose, then I STRONGLY recommend bolting it down.

    Cust:........oh.......

Yeah, you didn't see me PICK IT UP to put it in your car? 87 pounds isn't light, but it's hardly an immovable load.

I'm just glad that I was able to get away with diplomatically calling him a dumbass.

87lb -> 40kg... which is about the same as two 17" CRTs, and less than my (electric) piano.

Yeah, I wouldn't be able to lift that straight up - at least not easily - but that doesn't mean I couldn't move it. And I'm a weedy little geek.

I could move that even with tendonitis acting up in my right shoulder, two bones spurs on my neck and a slipped cervical disc.

      It's called a hand truck.

I'm a fairly out of shape girl and I could carry that out of his house with haste. Or bring a second person..

Surprisingly enough even bolted down safes won't stop some thieves. I remember hearing this at Borders back in late November.
A guy's house was robbed, All valuables were taken. And most were in a bolted down safe. The thieves used chizzles to bust the bolted safe free and made away with it.

Yeah, "bolting it down" to some people means "drill a small hole in the floor and drive a screw in". To me, for a safe it means "drill a big-ass hole in the floor and use a multi-locking metal 8 inch expanding anchor, and preferably a bit of epoxy resin too"

I can lift 87 pounds & I'm just a little thing...lol. You'd be surprised by how much weight a person or two can haul if they're really determined.

I had half a duplex once, true shithole of a place but it had a safe sunk into the closet floor under the carpet. Landlord actually had a key to set the combination on the keyrings [2 of them] for the place. Was fantastic when I got robbed by a roomie moving out on me while I was at work. I never told him that there was a safe in the place =) so he never got my spare sidearm, my jewelry or the small amount of cash I managed to save from various paychecks.
