  • I think I caused a store meltdown. Long

    Background:

The guy I work for recently built a store in an area that is known for drug problems. Boss is not from this state and listened to the Corporate office instead of me. He has told me several times that he has learned his lesson about this, btw.

At the same time, he built and opened a store in the neighboring town.

Both of those stores are very needy. Whenever I'm dealing with problems in that area, I have to write the store number down because I get them mixed up all the time. For this, I'll call the meth area store #1 and the neighboring store #2.

    So, on to the story...

The opening manager at store 1 was upset that the Area Manager was hireing people who weren't part of her extended family. She constantly called me to complain about all the strangers in her store and how unreliable they were. She also complained about everything else under the sun, none of which I could change. I used to spend at least an hour a day holding her hand.

The closing manager at store 2 got hurt at her other job and had to take a week off. The area manager sent the non-family closing manager from store 1 to store 2 and took over closing duties at store 1 until they could find and train a reliable closing manager.

This really ticked off the opening manager at store 1 off. She wanted to fill the last management position in the store with family and now was stuck with the area manager, who was going to hire another unreliable stranger who wouldn't show up on time and make her work late.

The next day, the area manager had told me that he was on his way to store 1 so he could close. I didn't write that down, stupid me. The opening manager called me and wanted to know where the area manager was because she couldn't get him on his cell. (bad reception on some of those roads)

I got confused and told her that he was on his way to close store 2. Or maybe store 1. But I knew that he was going to be in her area and that she should leave a message on his cell and that when his phone started beeping, he would answer.

The area manager was supposed to be at store 1 at 3:30 so they could change shifts at 4:00.

About 3:15 the manager at store #3 called in a panic. The delivery truck had gotten the loading lift under a door and ripped the door off the hinges. I called the area manager and sent him to store 3. He asked me to call store 1 and explain what was going on.

I called store 1 at 3:32. Nobody answered. I poked the numbers in by hand in case my speeddial had malfunctioned. I looked in their computer and everyone had clocked out at 3:30.

I do believe that if I had not gotten confused and told the opening manager at store 1 that the area manager was closing store 2, or 1 or somewhere close that she would not have done this.

Not that it matters, the area manager was happyhappy, joyjoy when he realized that all of the family was gone and he'd just have to live at the store until he had it fully staffed again.
