  • Sometimes I talk too much.

So I was leaving work yesterday afternoon and had stopped to pick up a few items (soda for a party, a new outfit). I usually go through the self-checkouts at Wal-Mart because I prefer to bag my stuff myself, being a cashier, and because I'm competent enough to actually make the self-checkout experience speedy. But yesterday I noticed one cashier about done with her customer, and the self-checkout lines were decent-sized. So I went to a real cashier this time.

Well, the lady ahead of me was having trouble running her card. She wanted to run a debit as a credit, apparently. When I got there, I was just in time to hear the cashier tell her to hit "cancel" and see the customer enter a PIN number, which took her automatically to the cashback screen. She looked up at the cashier and said, "Now it's asking me if I want cashback."

So me and my big mouth asked, "Well, do you want cash back or not?"

The lady gave me a deathglare and explained testily that she was trying to run it as credit (I had my vest draped across one arm, so she probably guessed that I was an off-duty employee). I responded that she shouldn't have entered her PIN number then.

I managed to shut up after that, and they canceled the payment and re-ran the card, and the lady followed the directions this time. She actually smiled and thanked me as well as the cashier when she left, though the cashier told me the customer looked like she wanted to bite my head off for the rest of the transaction. Guess I should remember that if I'm shopping, I'm under no obligation to interact with other customers.

But honestly, how hard is it to follow directions for the pinpads?
