  • I'm still paying for this one!

When you become a manager at my store (a thrift store) you sign a sheet saying if you lose a drop (the big money along with some 5's and 10's you take from the drawer at designated times) you pay for it. I had been at the store awhile and seen other managers lose a drop and pay for it out of their checks. So I told myself when I became manager I would make sure all those drops made their way to the safe.

Things went well for the first few weeks, the alarm company came twice a week and all the drops were there, but then one day a certain drop was missing. Mine. The worst part is it was for 690 dollars. In my store that is a lot of money in one drop.

The other managers and myself figure I left it on the desk on a busy Friday afternoon and one of the employees saw it and grabbed it. 50 dollars comes out of my check every two weeks. Since we only get paid every 2 weeks I still have another... well let's just say my checks will be 50 dollars short for quite a few more months

Is that really legal? Have you considered looking into it?
You may not have even lost it. At one of the stores where I worked, a girl "lost" a deposit, but it was caught in the mechanism of the deposit slot at the bank and they found every penny when they took it apart.

Furthermore, I don't see why YOU should be held responsible for the theivery of one of your co-workers - were you the one that hired them? Sure, cash should never be left unattended, but HR shouldn't be hiring theives and then sheltering, aiding and abetting them by scapegoating their managers.

I'd rather have to repay it and keep my job then to be fired for it.

My old asshat of a boss would have a fit about driveoffs, so if I had the cash, I'd pay it out of pocket and not report it to him. No harm, no foul, still employed.
      I'm bringing disdain back...with a vengeance.

Oh, and your tool box called...you got out again.

I'd rather leave and get a job where the higher-ups don't make me pay for someone else's lack of morals.

But then again, unemployment is REALLY low where I am and everyone is looking for entry-level people, so it wouldn't be hard to find something else. I can imagine that if things were otherwise, I might stay for the sake of security.

I got fired b/c my till somehow came up $80 short twice..... now that's EXACTLY $80...... and one time I swear a co-worker stole the money........ but I even OFFERED to pay for it - I said of course I didn't take it (and everyone else said they didn't believe I took it), but I offered to pay for it........ I would think that would show I was a loyal and honest employee..... but nope - the District Manager had it out for me (I went over her head b/c she wouldn't help me transfer from my previous store in a different city and had HR helped me - guess maybe she got in trouble - anyway she was later fired b/c they FINALLY caught on that she was totally unqualified for the job and an idiot....but I digress) . So I ended up getting fired - 2 days before Christmas no less - and AFTER I had worked a full shift - so make me work all day, sit me down, ( I thought I was finally getting the promotion they had been promising me for about 8 months), and fire me - I was sooooo pissed. Anyway -there's my little story.

That's unfair that you have to pay for it - I mean, if you were the one that pocketed it, then by all means they could punish you, but you didn't do that, and you didn't screw up on purpose.
I remember hearing on the radio about the staff having to pay for drive offs at petrol stations, and one guy called in about his daughter, who took her workplace to workplace relations for that, but nothing happened, even after a year, they were still messing about (lost forms, re-sent forms, red tape, etc). Sometimes it's just not worth arguing about, unfortunately.
I could take my workplace to WorkSafe (the health and safety people) for any number of violations, but I'm leaving in 3 months, so there's no point.
