  • That's what you get for leaving the door unlocked!

It was around 8pm, and I had just worked a long and busy 11-hour shift at CVS. I was looking very forward to getting back home and collapsing into my bed. I go to level 2 in the garage and am somewhat depressed that the sun had gone down and it was dark.

I approach the car and notice the door was left unlocked. I was a bit troubled by this, as locking the door to me was automatic. Meh, no matter. I'm too tired to care, and it was a beater of a car, so it explains why nobody apparently stole it.

I enter the car and immediately notice an odd smell. Oh noes, someone did take advantage of the unlocked door, didn't they? I couldn't pinpoint the odor, though. It wasn't a bad odor as much as it was rather different.

I turn the key and find the ignition wouldn't even turn. Like, it wasn't even that the engine was trying to turn, I physically could not turn the key. It was at this point that my eyes adjusted to the darkness of the parking garage and I was able to look around the car a little more closely.

The upholstery was green, but it's supposed to be blue. I look behind me to see an empty babyseat in the back. It was at that point my face suddenly turned beet red and I could feel my stomach churn.

I look around to see if anyone was nearby, slowly opened the door, got out, and looked around again. A quick shudder goes through my body as I hope nobody, especially the owner, noticed this. I look over and see my car parked nearby, doors locked and without any papers or babyseat. Whew, well, at least this didn't happen to my friend. He had an ignition problem in his car that requires him to literally hotwire his own car to start it. I had the benefit of using the key to prevent me from accidentally driving away with it.

Fiancee: We're going to need to do laundry. I'm out of clean pants.
Me: Sounds like a job for Gravekeeper!
    Fiancee: What?!
    Me: Nevermind.

That's happened to me before. I had just got a shiny new silver PT Cruiser when I had to take a trip to WalMart. My then one year old started to put up a fuss on the way out, so I guess I wasn't really paying attention. I started to panic when my key wouldn't open the door of my car. Then I realized that there was no car seat in the car. I looked around and right behind me was my PT.

Ha! Years ago I had to go to the mall, and was cruising around the parking lot looking for a space. There were two green '98 Dodge Intrepids with an empty space between them. I pulled in, locked up and left - laughing my head off. Guess what I drive?

That happened to me and my mom, we were at a supermarket and as we come out to "mom's" car I see the window is rolled down and think 'oh great I forgot to roll the window up mom's gonna yell at me.' I was a bit ahead of my mom so I reached in and unlocked the door, opened it, car alarm goes off... 'wait mom doesn't have a... ah crap!' Car's looked exactly alike, same make and model, same exterior and interior. The only thing missing that I should have noticed was the crosses hanging from mom's rearview mirror.

Did you lock the car as you got out? That'd make them question what was going on when they got back.

My ex once did this with his Chrysler LeBaron convertible. Only, in his case, he could have driven off in someone else's car because he had the same key pattern (1 in 7 chance for that model/year), which he used to open the door.

I don't know what it was that clued him in to the fact he wasn't in his own car, but he got it sorted before trying to start it.

            ^-.-^

Yesterday, I was very entertained by watching a lady put her dog in the back of the wrong SUV at a Starbuck's parking lot at about 10am. She started to get into the driver's seat, looked startled, looked at her SUV parked on the other side and quickly grabbed her dog and left. Yes, I did laugh.

When I still had my first car, I came out of a shopping mall and thought "Oh shit! Someone's ripped off my rear wiper". Then, a couple parking spaces away, I saw another red Excel with a rear wiper (i.e. my car). For that year of Excel, the base model didn't come with a rear wiper, but the higher trim levels did.

Happened to me and my Mom about 15 years ago - the craziest thing is - it was a Ford van, and my Mom's key UNLOCKED the other woman's van!! We were about to get in when we realized it wasn't ours (different colour carpeting). We locked it back and were walking over to our van (one aisle closer to the store than we realized, as we had exited a different door) and saw what was the owner of the vehicle we had unlocked trying to unlock Mom's car but it wasn't working. Mom told her what happened, and I hope she went to the Ford dealership to get a new lock!!!
