My father and I have largely different attitudes towards getting things done. Sometimes his method works--like when he bought "neverbuyaxbrandcomputer.com" and told X brand that unless they stopped dicking me around and gave me back my laptop, he was going to populate it. My laptop was in-the-mail two hours later--and sometimes my method works.
Rarely do I use my femininity as a tool. I was recently told that sex is the physical differences between male and female, and gender refers to the mental and sociological male and female. So I would be of the female sex, but the male gender.
However, I've found a smile and a soft, feminine voice can go a long way to getting things done. If people like me, they're more willing to do things for me.
Dad, on the other hand, likes to intimidate. This makes him nearly indecipherable from a sucky customer, even if his point is valid.
Let me give you a transcript of two calls recently, where someone called the marina:
Guy: Well how are you little lady?
Me: Gooood. What can I do for ya? (note that despite the slang, I'm not from the south, but the rural north)
Guy: I'm looking for P. Is he around?
Me: No, he's hidin'. He musta known you were calling.
Guy: Really?
Me: Nah, he's right here.
*I hand over the phone to P*
P: No, that was a year ago.
P: Yeah, I DID ORDER FROM YOU.
P: You never filled the order, so we ordered from someone else!
P: Yeah you too.
Second call:
P picks up the phone.
P: OH REALLY?
P: Well if [phone service] wanted to IMPROVE their service, making it ACTUALLY WORK!
P: Yeah, your phones go out once a month. Whenever it RAINS.
And when the 'card service holders' called us, and he couldn't get a real person on the phone to berate, every time he walked by the fax machine, he had it dial them three times in a row.
They have never called back.
