  • HR just po'ed me

BG/ My day job boss retired in August 2012. Since then I have assumed his old duties. IOW, I've had the job--the title and pay grade are another story/End BG
A couple months ago HR finally got around to taking apps for that position about time. Nonetheless, I submitted my application. Well I got an email from HR that they are now taking applications for that position. You're reading this right: some POS decided that I'm not qualified for the job I've been doing for coming up on 14 months, now.

My boss of 5 months asked me to distribute the notices (there were other openings). I asked why this one was open again. She intially replied, "It's a long story."
I retorted, "I have two and a half hours."

She then claimed that there was some problem with the job description and that 'they' wanted to make sure that everyone qualified got a chance to interview.

I'm thinking BS as she had been overheard (what workplace doesn't have walls with ears?) articulating a bias against insiders (she herself wasn't promoted within). I can't help but wonder if she didn't personally deep six my app in favor of a pal from her old workplace.

Thank you for the chance to vent. CS'ers are great
I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!

That kind of crap is so common, it's almost standard procedure.

There are many companies whose standard practice is to hire from the outside. They are so scared of the Peter Principle that they don't even try to develop and improve staff internally.

Hold it, they've served this to you on a silver platter, you can no refuse the job duties on the grounds that you are not qualified
Interviewer: What is your greatest weakness?
Me: I expect competence from my coworkers.

It's felt like that at the library sometimes......as though managers would rather do "lateral transfers" and hire from the outside rather than promote current staff.

Was this a decision by HR or by your boss? Is there someone else who factors into the decision-making that you can discuss this with? And are these extra duties things other employees can do or do they require special training (which means YOU would be training the replacement)?

I'd approach HR and any relevant people to make the case for why you should be reconsidered, or at least get compensation for the extra duties and training expected of you. Go armed with details of how you've benefited the company, what you bring to the table, and what compensation others with similar skills earn.

Agreed, bandshee. I already submitted my application. There is a supposedly some policy which gives me an edge. I am also looking into that.

Update of sorts: I had the interview for the position this morning. I like to think it went well.
