  • Key machine hassles, weird guest question

Our key machine was down for a good 45 minutes, from about 2:45 on, which isn't the busiest part of the day for check-ins, but it's pretty close. We had three employees at a time running around like headless chickens letting people into their rooms. It was pretty nightmarish.

Hold me, Meyers's Rum...oh wait. I can't do that until Friday. *sigh*

Luckily most of the guests were pretty understanding. Except the people who kept trying to find out if we had some kind of spares somewhere. Turned out we did, except they were made sometime before Fall 2009, judging by the key types, so I'd be surprised if any of the ones we handed out actually worked.

I brought this party who had three rooms their keys after the machine started working again, and one of the guys (this guy is like in his mid-40s and has a bunch of kids with him, just Joe Average American) STARES at my head.

Him: You got something on your hair.
Me: *feeling for possible giant bugs* You mean water? It is raining.
Him: No, I mean on top.
    Me: *blink*
Him: It's some kinda bright color.
Me: Oh, yeah. It's hair dye. It washed out of the rest of my hair.
Him: What kind? Is that like, Manic Panic?
Me: (I wish! If they'd let me do unnatural colors here, I would have purple hair!) No, just regular hair dye.
    Him: What kind?
Me: *slightly weirded out* Um, L'Oreal Feria?
Him: Oh, okay. Well, thanks, have a nice day.

I just...I guess maybe he was trying to be friendly? It was an odd conversation all the way around. I guess that in that particular building, the lighting is pretty unusual, so it probably looked really bright, unnatural red.

Manic panic was the bomb back in the 90s. Purple and blue were my go to colors back then.

We have "fail safe" keys for that such occasion. I think they get re-done once a year. The only issue with handing them out is we have to let the guest know those special keys MUST come back to the desk at check out. (Its a pain in the arse to make more since only 2 people at the property can make them.)

We also have a master hard key in case the door batteries die.
