  • That's beyond me

As some of you are aware, I freelance tutor. I get students for not only essay writing, but also social studies, which covers everything remotely under the umbrella. Kindergarten? I can get them. College? Sure. History? Yep. Psychology? It's there. Economics? Oh yeah.

Of course, the issue with this is that, you know, we of the social studies umbrella aren't necessarily good in all of these areas.

In my case, I'm horrible at economics.

I get the concepts! I can talk about the theories, or at least look them up. It's the applications which get me. I swear to God, every time I've looked up an economic formula to walk a student through, they report back that whatever website they're submitting to tells them the answer we came up with is wrong.

But if I turn down economic sessions, I'm told that I need to at least try

I just wanna go strangle my econ professor for being so useless now!

Anyway, anybody else have job issues come up where it's something you just can't do no matter what the boss wants?

I completely understand about having trouble with economics. Even as an accounting/business tutor, I cannot help with economics. It doesn't help either that I've only gone through Microeconomics and not Macro. But either way, I always tell my students that the only help they'll most likely get from me is that two heads are better than one stuff. Heck, from what I recall there's some anecdotes out there about economists not even completely understanding economics.

I suppose I should audit those classes again one of these days so I can actually try to understand it better.

But back to the topic at hand, there was only one time where that has occurred for me during a filing clerk job where I was asked to sort out files into a new folder using a guide they had made up. Probably would have been easier if they actually sat there and trained me since none of the papers I was putting into the folder had anything remotely to do with what the guide paper said no matter how I read it.

Thank goodness the boss realized that after seeing my clumsy attempts and and held me off of doing that until I was able to be taught the filing procedure for that office. Still can't make heads nor tails of what I was doing, thinking back on it.

Everyone has a subject they're bad at. I'm incredible at math but the most I can remember about history are those dates that get drilled into every child's head since Kindergarten, and I often can't even remember those exactly. And I don't even try with anything related to politics, considering how history is so closely related.
The fact that jellyfish have survived for 650 million years despite not having brains gives hope to many people.

You would have to be incredibly dense for the world to revolve around you.
