  • Well ... that settles THAT

I was, again, let go from my office job.

JUST like the last time: no warnings. No indications that I was performing so badly that I was a hindrance to the company. Absolutely nothing.

This is getting ridiculous. Age 60 or no, I think I need to look at some other field. This is ridiculous and I'm getting sick of it.

That sucks. And it's not easy being an older worker in this job market. I'm still trying to find something myself. I wish you all the best in your job search.

Thanks, XCashier. It's very frustrating when you know you are perfectly capable of doing whatever job you're looking at, but can't get hired (or as here, get hired and then get let go, well after your probation period, with virtually no explanation).

Can't do much except keep plugging, I guess.

Good luck to yourself as well. I hope you find something soon!

I'm so sorry! My instinct is to tell you it probably has nothing to do with you but the budget. Your skills and intelligence will net you something. I wish you were in my town and could come work with me. I have complaints, but my loyalty to the customers really is appreciated by my bosses. My frustration comes out of my commitment and they know that.

Thank you, Food Lady. I wish I lived closer as well; you sound like you are a good person to work and train with!

I'm not sure about budget; I wrote elsewhere about the odd situation with Senior Secretary: she had initially been really chatty and was training me, and all of a sudden it was like somebody flipped a switch: she barely spoke to me and all training stopped. I have absolutely no clue what sparked that, but the end result was that hours would go by during which I would have nothing to do. I asked her on several occasions if she had anything she wanted help with "because I have nothing to do" and she'd always say no.

I do find it interesting that Bossman says I can cite him as a reference.

So I go in Monday to pick up my final cheque and gather up my stuff and that's that.

I would've had to look elsewhere anyway; even with the retail job, once my mother is gone and I have to leave this house, I was not making nearly enough to live on.

I'm going to see what other possibilities are out there, though. I've about had it with the legal field.

A thought- look at county and city government job listings for your area. Most positions will be office/clerical and once you get past your probation period with government jobs (at least in the part of the US where I live) it takes pretty much a really major screw up to lose it.

Thanks for the suggestion, Kittish! My area right now is pretty economically depressed, so not much hiring going on, but it's certainly something to keep an eye on. Ya never know ...

Yep, the area where we live is, too. Boyfriend still was able to land a job at the county jail as a technician. His job is mostly clerical, and he doesn't have to come into direct contact with the inmates. It's also unlikely to have its funding cut, as the technicians are necessary.

                  Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I was going to get up early to get my stuff, but I think I'll wait till after 4:30 ... because 4:30 is when Senior Secretary goes home.

No, I don't plan to whine to Now Former Bossman about her. Just not really interested in interacting with her if I can avoid it.

I also want to be absolutely sure Bossman is in the office, as I plan to ask whether he wants to check what I'm taking, or oversee my packing, and not her. Because frankly, I don't entirely trust her.

Also, as I wrote elsewhere on this site, I'm not feeling well (scratchy throat, sneezing, etc.)

Also, since I no longer have to get up early ...

So I dropped by tonight to grab my stuff and pick up my final two paycheques. I won't get my Record of Employment for a while ... apparently this is the first time his office has had to fill one out and they had to start from scratch (it seems to be something of a convoluted process). He says I should get it within the next week or so.

I was thinking my final two paycheques would go far towards replacing my computer so I could look for online work but ... one of 'em is already gonna have to be dipped into the balance of my auto insurance, my upcoming internet bill, AND the payday loan I took on when I thought I still had a permanent job. *sigh*

Have to admit I timed it so I'd get there after Senior Secretary had left for the day. The more I think about the last few months, the less I wanted to have to face her for any reason. What kind of senior employee indulges in a two- to three-month-long pout without once attempting to tell the newcomer what the problem is?? (Which is basically what happened: she totally stopped speaking to me and all training stopped. I thought she might be having issues at home -- I'd heard plenty about her dysfunctional family -- so I admit I didn't try to address the matter either. But at my retail job, if they are having a problem with something you're doing, they confront you with it ASAP.)
