  • ????Is it suspicious????

So I got a call for an interview in another state (though the actual job is closer) and they asked me to bring my ssc, my DL, and a check for DD. It's a delivery job and it pays well, though it hard work, over 250 deliveries a day for 10 hrs a day. the most I've done was 50 delivers a day and it took all day. They say it's because most are in those sprawling apt complexes that look like they have a whole city's pop. in them, we have s lot of those in DC. Anyway, I said sure since its twice what I'm making now, but I wonder if I can really do it. I also wonder if it's a good or bad sign that they want your info at the interview, usually they interview you first amiright? Maybe it's a scam that'll waste my time.

Google the place...and what do they want the check for?

If they want all that info right up front, it sounds like they're just blindly recruiting all comers, which raises all sorts of red flags in my book.

What is this DD that they want a cheque for? I'd guess that bringing your social security card is so that they can check if you're legally allowed to work in the U.S., and your DL is to see if it's the right class and so they can pull your record (don't want to waste time on anyone who can't legally take a job driving the class of vehicle involved, or who has a record their insurer won't cover).

250 deliveries a day? Assuming a 10 hour day, that's 25 deliveries per hour, or roughly 1 every 2 minutes. Unless they count each of a stack of waybills signed for by the same person as a separate delivery (e.g. taking a dozen overnight envelopes to the same office counts as a dozen deliveries), that's not possible.

I'd ask them about the 250 deliveries, specifically how many vehicle stops, and how many "hand over and get paperwork signed" stops (could have a few in the same building, covering the same vehicle stop), are involved in doing the 250 deliveries.
Any fool can piss on the floor. It takes a talented SC to shit on the ceiling.

You shouldn't have to pay any money to get a job. With ID, SSN, and a check, can't they steal your identity and empty your account?

          DD is direct deposit.

They could be doing a "mass hire" because they expect a lot of attrition with 250 deliveries a day.

Chances are they have very low hiring standards. They will make you an offer at the interview. They probably rely on burnout and unreasonable goals to create turnover to keep payroll costs down.

yeah DD is for direct deposit...I googled the name of the place and nothing definitive came up...and I guess that they counted the multiple packages some people will be getting in that number? I really hope they don't ask for a sig though, that's really annoying. I'd rather just leave it. I guess I'll go and see becuase my bills are crying for attention, I really hope it's not s scam though. I let you know how it goes. Wish me luck!

My experience has been that they want you to bring a check when you sign up for direct deposit, because they don't believe you know how to find the RTN and account number on the check, despite the fact that it's not all that hard. (RTN = routing transit number, used to identify a bank in the US banking system.)

Typically, though, they'll also tell you to void the check before you hand it over.

Yep, that's pretty much how ID theft happens. Throw in your birthdate, and you've given them free reign. While the job could be legit, most employers usually don't ask for all of your information during an interview, unless like Wolfie mentioned, they're going to do some checking to see if you're suitable as a driver.

Sounds more like they're just hiring, not interviewing. As you noted, the check is for direct deposit, fairly common, the other two documents are for taxes. I9 I think is the form, it requires two forms of ID, one from column A, one from Column B, with DL and SSC being the most common used.

If the ID is for the I-9 Form it is illegal for the employer to specify which documents to bring to fill out the form, it is up the employee to read the requirements and to supply whichever documents they wish.

Wasn't aware it was illegal, but most employers I've dealt with have said 'bring two forms of ID like a Social Security Card and a driver's license.'

Yep, the employer cannot specify which documents the employee presents.

If they present a List A document the employer cannot ask nor require the employee to present List B or C documents. Same thing with List B & C documents, you can't ask nor require List A documents.

The handbook for the I-9 is 65 pages long.

When this form was brand spanking new back in the mid-80's, i had to fill out one for my one summer job. THEY told me DL and SS card; i read the form and brought my passport as I had lost my SS card. "oh no, it MUST be your SS card" I went back and said no, the FORM says this or that, and either one are acceptable forms of ID. Well, they were highly suspicious of that, despite the fact I couldn't actually PRODUCE my SS card, as i had lost it.

well, in teh end, they "spoke with" one of the executives (small co, no HR dept) and since HE said was ok, they'd accept my passport. Sheesh.
