Sofar's bee story reminded me of this one, from my time before at the store.
It was one of the first time's the SM had taken off all day and left me in charge. Things were going good, and I had noticed that he and his wife had driven by earlier to go have lunch at the pizza place next door.
I'm up at the register doing something (return, void, don't remember just what) when this sweet little old lady approached. She very calmly and quietly called me away from the line, then in a hushed voice told me, "I thought you should know there's a bat on the floor back by the trashcans. I think it's dieing, it's thrashing around in the middle of the aisle."
Now our trashcans at that time were set up at the back of our main central aisle, so this wasn't some out of the way corner. How I got so lucky as to have this sweet sensible lady see it first and not some screaming panic stricken customer I'll never know. And that, by the way, is not really a jab at any screaming panic stricken customers, I was tempted to lean that way myself.
We get a lot of bats around here, we're not far from Austin which has a wonderful community of Mexican Free Tail bats. I love to go to the docks at night and watch them swoop down and catch bugs. However, they can carry rabies. And a bat out in the daytime is generally NOT a good thing.
So I go to check and sure enough, there's this little bat flopping around, kind of jerking. He'd move a bit, be still, jerk a little. I got one of the trashcans with a flat top and covered him up, then kind of scooted it over out of the aisle and asked one of the girls working to keep an eye on it. I felt kind of bad pushing it around, but not enough to take any chances. Run to the front of the store, check the parking lot, YES, SM's car is still outside.
He got a good laugh about it, actually. Came over, retrieved the little net he'd use to catch the occasional bird that would fly in when we were unloading a truck. He scooped up the bat, went out the back door, and though I didn't see it I feel sure that popping sound I heard was said net w/ bat hitting the side of the building. When he came back in, he jokingly asked me, "Didn't you know that animal control was part of the job?" I laughed and told him we'd negotiate those wages anytime he wanted to discuss it. We both laughed, he went back to lunch with his wife, and the girls and I had something to laugh about the rest of the day.
