  • Never heard back from them...

I applied for a job I saw in the classified ads. It was at a very reputable business and I e-mailed them everything, just like it said to in the ad. For starters, I am so sick of applying for job after job and never hearing back from them, but I'll rant about that some other time.

Anyways, I am a little concerned as to why I didn't hear back from them. By all logical standards, I was a perfect candidate for this job. I fit every qualification to a tee, and according to the ad, they were actually looking for several people, not just one. I applied exactly as it said to and sent everything accurately.

It's been about a week since I sent the e-mail. Should I e-mail them back? I mean, this is a job I could do backwards and in my sleep.

    What should I do?

You might as well drop them an email - after all, you've got nothing to lose. I quite often send out something along these lines:

Dear Sir/To whom it may concern/Hello/Hi [depending on how formal the business is, etc]

I recently applied for the post of Cashier/Optical Assistant/Snake-Charmer/Evil Overlord as advertised [where, when]. However, I haven't heard back from you. [Or - I was disappointed to hear I wouldn't be offered the job of, etc.] I'd consider myself well-qualified to do the job and others like it, so I'd really appreciate some feedback as to why I wasn't suitable. This is a career I'd like to move into, so if there's something I'm doing wrong, I'd like the opportunity to work on it.

Many thanks for taking the time to help me. [Or - thanks again for meeting with me, thank you for your time, etc]

    Sincerely

    Fera Festiva

Keep it friendly, and a lot of places will give you feedback (although some of the time it'll just be "we had too many applications"). Also, it raises your profile - it might be that they are still in the process of shortlisting. It can't do you any harm to give them another reason to remember your name.

    Oh, and good luck.

      What Fera said.

Also, did you send it by a "professional" sounding email? It's amazing how many people send in applications from hotstudplaya69@emailaddress.com and hotnwet4u@otheremailaddress.com...

Heh. For those wondering, I've been told a good address for a 'business address' e-mail is your first name and last initial with a made-up number, aka JohnD3875@email.com. Safe enough to use, I think, if you're not planning on putting it up anywhere crazies can get to it.

That frustrates me to no end. I just interviewed for a job last week and I've yet to hear from them. What's even more irritating is when said job says they're looking for help and then they never call you. I mean WTF?

I would follow up with a phone call, rather than an email. They might have a closing date for the vacancies, at the gallery they wouldnt even begin to look at resumes until the closing date had finished.

Well, where I work, there have been at least two instances of Manager 1 advertising a job, then Managers 2, 3, and 5 all want in on the action, so the pile of resumes just sits there for WEEKS.

I'm leaving in two weeks and they haven't even started interviewing... and I gave them six weeks notice.

I hear ya. I got an interview at a rather nice warehouse that I woudl have loved to work at. They seemed to be thrilled with me and told me the next day to go ahead and fill out the application and fax it on over. Called the next day to make sure they got it. He said yes but he hadn't had time to check my references. I asked my supervisor here the next day if she'd gotten a call about me (she's one of my good references) and she hadn't heard from him. I called a few days later and left a message for him. Called his cell number he gave the next day and left a message and finally emailed him the day after that.

I never heard back from them. You'd think they'd at least have the courtesy to call and say thanks but we're not interested.

I'm going through that train of thought right now. What's really irritating is that they said they needed help and yet they don't call. Well, if it makes sense it's not allowed. *sigh*

Thanks for all of the advice. I'm thinking about dropping them a line tomorrow. In the past year, I've applied for so many jobs, but have only heard back from just a handful.

I'm starting to think the majority of jobs I apply for are actually already filled... they just have to advertise it because of EOE regulations or whatever.

For this job, though, they were apparently looking for several people not just one, so I'm not sure what the deal is. Hopefully they'll at least let me know.

Ive read somewhere that only 7% of jobs are listed in the newspapers or online.... its tough!

                          Good luck for tomorrow though!

Don't assume you've been passed over. It's only been a week. It's a good idea to touch base to "make sure they got it, as you are really interested", and that you "hope very much to be considered" but do not assume you've been passed over.

That shows a lack of confidence. Touch base with them, and re-iterate how enthusiastic you are about the job, but don't go on about "what you might have done wrong."

Heck, it took me over a month to get the job I'm at now. Probably closer to two.

I got a job because I did call back to check on the status of a CV I'd sent in. The owner told me later that he had had second thoughts about the position, but that my call made him decide that I was professional and persistent, and would be a good assistant. (He ended up being my first husband.)
