  • "So I decided to get into a safer line of work..."

Sorry, line ripped from the Strip!

I've decided I'm completely fed up with retail as a whole. Not just Circuit City but the business in general. No matter where I go to observe to think of a place to possibly move on to, I always notice the same grim and unhappy faces, becuase of having to deal with sucky customers. I have decided now, to get into a safer line of work. Safer, that is, for my sanity and my poor heart.

After this next semester I'm going to have Bartlett Nuclear place me in outage work. Basically I'd be on decon and helping re-fuel nuclear reactors, especially by decontaminating everything. I'd be spraying everyone and their mother off with a hose :P including the spent fuel casks. Outages are about 4-6 weeks at a time, working 6 days a week and 12 hour shifts. Per Diem is paid, usually around 120 if you have to stay locally, and the job starts at 10 for jr./entry-level. I've always wanted to get into this field so this is rather exciting. And guess what?

    No rebates.
    No discounts.
    No price adjustments.
    No ad misprints.
No kids punching me in the stomach.

Pure unadulterated physical labor that will probably eventually lead to IT work within Exelon or PSEG.

    I can't bloody wait.

(Can i still post on here please? )

            Reminds me of a quote...

I want to do something more relaxing - like dismantle live nuclear weapons,
            -Ari Fleischer on retirement
"The most likely way for the world to be destroyed, most experts agree, is by accident. That's where we come in; we're computer professionals. We cause accidents."

LOL @ Ari Fleischer quote. That's pretty awesome, and exactly the same way I feel.

              I am not sure exactly when to call the agency. I want to get this semester of school out of the way before trying outage work, because it will knock me out at least 4 weeks. I may be able to make a deal with the community college to allow me delayed start in my classes, as long as I keep up chapter-wise and work-wise, emailing what I can to the professor. The problem is, some classes are offered only in the fall and some only in the spring -_-;

Advice on what I should do school-wise would be appreciated. Since this is rather flexible it's an option to do both, I would just be away for a few weeks at a time for sporadic periods of time... Do you think they'd be willing to work with me at least for a few semesters?

There's a misconception I can't stand though. Nuclear power is considerably less dangerous than everybody seems to think. My job isn't even anywhere near the control room >.>

Wait a minute. You're an outsourced employee? That means your "customers" are the regular plant employees? And YOU get to BRING A HOSE TO BEAR ON THEM???!!!!
Good lord, I'll say you get to keep posting! I wanna hear about you taking the brush to the whiner who thinks you weren't thorough enough with the hose.....
                    (Congrats on moving outta retail.)

                        A funny chat transcript today...

Nuke Worker Friend: yea so if its not a real job how is their pc getting fixed?
                        Me: Precisely.
Me: However, abuse and absence of intelligence from customers is one thing. ALMOST tolerable at times, if it weren't for the insane levels I absorb.
Me: They're like radiation. Working in retail is like rolling around in a cask of spent fuel naked.

Also, yes I get to work with regular plant people but apparently there's a very low SC factor. I'm told as a woman the only thing I'll have to watch out for is excessive cat calls and offers for a little power outage extravangaza at a hotel that charges by the half hour.

Alas, I love my boyfriend so. Sorry to all the ravenous outage men out there, I'm off the menu.
