  • Black Friday is coming up...

And I don't have to work it!
    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Oh, you don't know how good it feels.
In fact, if I get it scheduled right, I get a minimum of 4 days off, possibly 5 for that week. A 2-day work week; I can handle that.

No whiny SCs, no dreadful Christmas music, no 15-hour shifts with only an hour lunch, no being in the store at 4 a.m., no trying to upsell a customer from a crappy, cheap gift to a crappy, more expensive gift.

Instead, I'll roll out of bed around 7 a.m. (that's sleeping in for me), get my coffee, watch some television, maybe read a book, lounge around all day. Not doing anything in particular.

There are times when I miss the retail scene. But Black Friday isn't one of those times!

    Anyone else?

Oh I do, I do. I may still stand behind a counter and sell things, but Convenience Stores are a completely different world than Retail. We're actually about to hit the yearly SLUMP for our sales, according to A (the Store Mngr.).

I was also surprised to find out he didn't bat an eye at me requesting a whole week off around Christmas. He just said "Write it up in the "Notes' page of the scheduling book, and have fun." WOOT!

It's the Friday after Thanksgiving, the official shopping day of the Christmas season, and general mad house.

It is the Friday after the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday. All retailers have big sales to get a jump on the Christmas season, and it generally devolves into a shopper melee, with occasional riots in certain places.

I wish I was kidding. I try not to even leave the house that day, as I live within a mile of a big mall right now.

I just realized I will have to work my first ever Retail Black Friday this year . . . . luckily it is a 4 hour end of day shift.
Yes, I did get the Holiday Part Time job I applied for. (Which means that I will be able to get some nice Christmas Gifts for my 2 nephews and 1 niece)

I do have to work that day if I'm in town (my usual half-shift), but will be down in the dungeon office. The store usually doesn't open until noon, I have no idea if we're going to open earlier or not though.

Ooooh, you're all gonna get in TROUBLE! It's HOT Friday...

Yeah, I don't buy it either.

And stop bragging! I just got a job at Toys R' Us seasonal, so I'll probably be required to work on Black Friday AND the day after Christmas.

Basically, take Boxing Day up here, and park it right after their thanksgiving.

The naming of it is dependent on who you ask. Corporations see it as the the first day that they're not operating in debt (kinda like the tax free point in the year) and are running "in the black" so to speak.

Retail workers label it in closer relation to Edmonton's Black Friday (F4 tornado at the end of July 1987) where the results can be defined as a natural disaster.

Since I am now a manager...I have to work open to close on black friday (5am-10pm). In addition as a management team we have decided that NO ONE on staff gets off on black friday. Not showing up for work will be grounds for immediate termination. In addition because it is black friday all non management employees will be only required to work 5 hours...if they want to work more (please oh please oh please say yes).. then they are welcome to. I work in an outlet mall...so black friday should be TONS of fun.

well at least this year I do not have to deal with all of the "give me MORE coffee so I can shop longer" crowd as I no longer work at the gas station.

I do however have to do pizza delivery. now this means we will get 100's of calls from the local mall (mostly employees who as everyone here know have to work like ahhhhh 24 hours straight that day). this mass of people hitting the malls means that I have to "park illegally" as the lot is absolutely FULL wjhilst I am delivering to said mall. the last two years I made VERY good tips on Black Friday
I'm lost without a paddle and headed up SH*T creek.

I more than likely will have to work that day. However, I work in a grocery store (second shift, even!!), so it shouldn't be too bad.

I'll probably be working 10:30 pm to 7 am Thanksgiving night, which would put me in the first two hours of Black Friday.
