  • How old are they??

I got a cute game. Name the oldest piece of electronic hardware at your store in use.

At my place, we have 5 registers that date back to the 90's. One is prone to paper jams, and we don't use two of them for some odd reason.

LOL well we have a 76 semi out back. Does that count? In the actual office, well, I'll have to check again tomorrow.

No games but some of the machines in the factory were brand new the late 80s and early to mid 90s. The machines I teach to trainees were brand new in 1995. And it's really starting to show. The worst part is a lot of the machines' parts come from Germany, so it takes weeks to get them.

An old 1984 Ford truck. The thing has caught fire 3 or 4 times (And it's still running), the transmission indicator (P, R, N, D) is broke, and there's a load of other problems. I hated that truck.

For a somewhat "small town" wastewater plant, we are very much up to date. Most of our processes are automated. I just push a button to change this valve, or push that button to open a gate. Pretty neat.

But we do have some old equipment. We have a big truck that is from the Korean war. We have 3 dumptrucks that are older than I am. And our forklift? I think that was made when forks were invented!

We have a bunch of old monochrome "dumb" terminals in the store room for some reason. Basically just monitors and keyboards that are wired to a remote computer.

Also, the HP Laserjet 5 that I stuck the complainers with the other day.

I bet we've got stuff lying around from when the store opened in 1977.

I say this only because we never seem to throw anything out. We had boxes of old records that were supposed to have been destroyed a couple years ago, but we only got around to disposing of them recently.

One thing I did get to see was a floor plan of the store, dated 1986.

My store is a brand new store (1 year old) so we have state of the art equipment...including a handy dandy bill checking machine that we put large bills in...then it highlights the watermarks

                      ahh old shit....I've got

A semi-auto electric 18" Guillotine paper cutter from around circa 1980-1985 (not exactly but the company no longer exists).

A single head drill press (for paper) around the same era the company still exists

a manual 14" Guillotine paper cutter that is probably from about 1979-1981

a pnuematic folder from the early 90's

                      several computers that are P2's

a couple of 10+ year old copiers (that are just taking up space until I get off my ass and dump 'em)

Our front counter that is from 1979, it's been refinished and resurfaced about 7 years ago.

                      a 15+ year old microwave

I even have a old radio that is at least 20-30 years old.

At home I have some tools that are well over 50-60 years old. They belonged to my grandfather and I got them when my grandmother sold her house and moved into a retirement home about 3-4 years ago.

and up until 2 years ago the former owner was the oldest thing here, he was circa 1930's LOL.

I don't use it, but I fix it-one of the local industrial supply firms still uses co-ax networking.

The till computers on box office date back to the cinema opening, 10 years ago. They run on Windows 95 and the credit card swipers are held down with blu-tack.

Well, now that we have a replacement CC printer (the old one apparently failed quite spectacularly over the weekend), it has to be the debit-PIN pad attached to said machine. I remember that thing from when the store first opened (before I was even considering working there).

The upstairs computer is in the running though...I haven't been able to figure out the date of manufacture (it's a beige-box that has a number of--IMO halfassedly done--homebrewed mods to keep it limping along).

So I'd say it's a tie between PIN-pad and upstairs computer.

We have an antique paper cutter downstairs that still gets use. And I don't use the term "antique" lightly. It's crank-powered, made of cast iron, and has so many sharp edges and jagged parts that I'm pretty sure that just having it on the grounds constitutes a hazardous environment

We're still trying to figure out exactly how old it is, but we're guessing it's from at least the 1920's. I figure it's probably older than that.

If not that, one of the reporters keeps an old typewriter on his desk (and uses it for his stories!) that's got to be at least 50. Once he gets in, I'll ask him about it.
