  • The Greatest Scheduling Coup in Retail History

OK, maybe the thread title is overselling it slightly, but listen to this:

I have Christmas Eve OFF WORK.

Our store is too small to need every member on staff that day, so ONE of us gets the day off every year. Its never me, because corporate gets really ticked off if one of their top salespeople isn't there on the biggest day of the year. Sadly, I have been an overachiever of the worst kind, and can't fly under the radar.

But a few days ago my manager said to me: "I don't think its fair to punish a good employee by giving them all the crappy shifts. I am going to reward you by giving you either Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve off. Pick one."

I chose Christmas Eve, because even if I have to work an eleven-hour shift on New Years Eve, we're only open until 7 pm. Still lots of time to go out if I want.

    Hurray!

If you have to ask, it's probably better posted at www.fratching.com

I found out the other day that our bank is closing at noon on Christmas even and 2pm on New Year's eve. The branch manager said that has never, ever happened in the 10+ years she's worked for them. Although, I'm sure we'll get a few people on the day after Christmas and January 2nd who complain that we closed early the day before those holidays and we weren't open on the holidays.

I'm just so glad that I'm not working in tourist trap land where they're open 365 days a year which obviously includes Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years.

Smart manager. Forcing your best employees to work all of the bad shifts will burn them out quickly (as well as it not being nice or fair). So he rewarded you with a holiday off. Big kudos to your manager!

I have the same problem. I was crying this morning as I told my manager I did NOT want to be in Children's Wear anymore. I am too good at my job. apparently the ASM says she wants me in there all the time.

I managed to convince my manager though to rotate others through it, thank god.

Too bad there aren't more managers like that in the retail word. Good job on being a good salesperson and good job to your manager for being a good manager.

"Why yes. Yes it does," said the Jester from Tourist Trap Land...

That being said, I am attempting to work my Deal With The Devil that I somehow manage to work out every year at whatever job I am at. Since I was not at The Bar last holiday season, this is my first year trying it out here.

This is my Deal With The Devil: I approached my server manager and bar manager at The Bar (since I am both a server and bartender now, I have two people to answer to), and said, "I have a proposition for you. I am volunteering to work a double on Thanksgiving, a double on Christmas Eve, and a double on Christmas Day." They both looked at me and said, "Okay, Jester, what do you want?" New Year's Eve and New Year's Day OFF! They said they'd think about it (pretty sure I have the bar manager convinced, still working on the service manager), but I am hoping they go for it.

For those of you wondering about my success rate with the Deal With The Devil, let me just tell you that the only year I have ever worked New Year's Eve was the year Arizona State was in the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day, and I was NOT about to miss THAT!

The simple fact is that far more people tend to want Christmas off than New Year's. My priorities are different, and I use this to my advantage. Plus, as far as the service manager goes, I have seniority over almost every other server there.

              And oh yeah...she LOVES me!

I just posted a thread about that type of SC here. I feel your pain.

Darlin', not everyone loves me. Not even everyone in CS Land loves me. (I happen to know I have annoyed more than one person in here, thank you very much.)

I know this. I accept this. And I move on with my life.

                    But thanks for the support.

I used to enjoy working christmas eve, is quite a nice atmosphere, you could sell anything you had excess of to 'the desperate' and you got to have a relativly decent time. This year however the most I will be doing is a half shift (5 hours) or not even at all, which I think I'll miss.

Its true. I think I'll miss that to some extent. Its sort of fun to sell things to desperate people. You can get rid of pretty much anything.
