  • Would you pursue this?

I applied a few weeks ago for a job at the local convenience store. Here's the timeline.

Friday, I got a message from one of the people regarding my application. I had to play her message back 5 times to figure out what she said because it was garblewarblefarbled.

I called back Friday after I deciphered the code, and was told the caller had gone home but to call back Saturday at 9 and she'd be there.

Called Saturday at 9 and was told "she went home, call back tomorrow at 9."

Called Sunday at 9 and was told "she's not here today, call back tomorrow at 9."

Called today at 9 and finally got the person. She couldn't find my application and she needed to ask somebody else where she put it. She left me on hold for 15 minutes looking, then came back and says she'd call me back right away as soon as she found my application.

    She never did call back.

Would you call again tomorrow? Would you just go to the store to find out what's going on?

Honestly, the person is incompetant and is probably going to hold it against you. Me, I wouldn't bother. If you feel like a confrontation or excuses, go ahead. Still, it seems like you are interested. All you lose is time.

I would actually go there. I'm not saying this because you have to get confrontational or whatever, but rather because it's obvious nothing's being resolved over the phone.

How badly do you want this job?

How badly do you need this job?

If you need it, pursue it. It would be money coming in.

If you just want it... Why? I am assuming this person "handling" your application is a manager. If it's this bad, and you don't even work there yet, how bad do you think it will be once you are hired in? I don't think it will get any better.

Pain, agony, and incompetence are what I see in your future.
Age and wisdom don't necessarily go together. Some people just become stupid with more authority.

          Here's the thing:

The only jobs in my immediate vicinity are retail. Convenience stores in particular would offer me overnight hours and I'd like those so that I can work, not have to put my daughter in childcare, and not interfere with my husband's hours.

We are barely squeaking by on what he makes, and I'd like to be able to contribute something. Not that this is going to pay a huge amount, but it would be something.

I am wondering about this because it really sounds like this place has no idea what they are doing, and I'm not sure I want to work for a place like this. If they haven't even interviewed me yet and are this ditzy, how do they run the store?

Sigh. I guess I'll keep looking because this one isn't worth the effort. Thanks, guys.

            It depends.

If the person who is giving you the runaround in charge, or just an employee?

If she's in charge, then no. This person will be making your schedule and making sure you get paid.

            Or not.

If she's not in charge, than maybe. Just remember you might end up working with this person.

The only real crime here is that she didn't call you back. She may have simply been relaying info that was given to her by the boss. Who may really be sick. She probably has no clue what's going on because nobody's telling her accurate info.
