  • New Job!!!

So, I moved last Saturday, and yesterday I was offered, and accepted, a new job!!!

I will be a Merchandise Control Analyst (still with B&N).

Maybe in a few weeks I'll be able to tell you what that means...

Last Thursday, my boss called me into his office, and told me about an opening in the Finance department for this position. I had met the boss the day before, during a casual conversation about multi-volume sets when my boss called me into the office. HR had just been notified of the position; I'm not sure it was even actually posted. My boss talked to his boss about when she was there Thursday morning. They were looking for someone with store experience, and some other things I have, not necessarily someone with finance experience. He told me what he knew about it, and I thought it sounded interesting. This was a little before 3:00 when he told me about it. About 20 minutes later, he calls me back in and says "Tom has some time at 4:00, we'll go up." So I talked to Tom for over an hour. Then on Monday, I talked to the other guy in the department and yesterday Tom asked me to come up and offered me the job.

It is a promotion, and comes with a $5000/year boost in salary. It is also a salaried position (I am hourly right now). And come review time in April, I will get the normal yearly raise. Woohoo!!

He and my current boss have worked out a deal to share me for a few weeks, though, since leaving right now would make my department 2 people short (and they only have 9 people when they're fully staffed; my new department has only 4, though). Plus they're doing all kinds of end-of-year stuff so it's not really the best time for a new person to be learning everything. So I will do a couple hours a day in the new department and the rest in the old. But he's going to put the paperwork through so my salary should go into effect next week.

So I have just moved out into a place of my own (with a roommate) and then this just kind of fell into my lap. I'm like, turning into a grownup or something!!

Good for you, congrats and uh.. watch out for the salary gremlins. It's a bit of a change going from hourly to salary. Find out EXACTLY what your responsibilities are, and then you won't get random things lumped into your responsibilities. (It can still happen, but it's less likely with documentation.)
