  • I'm not working here for fun!

Long story very very short, a small chain large bookstore by me knows me very well. (There's about 5-6 stores but they are big stores) To the point that I've worked more inventories there than all of the current employees sans about 2 or 3. They've gone through a recent upheaval with a lot of the management and senior staff leaving/quitting and the normal turnaround for the other staff when kids went to college, etc.

So the acting general manager BEGGED me to come in and help out on a limited basis. Essentially go in Thursday afternoon when I feel like it to about close, and Saturdays after my shift at my full-time job to about close. Or other selected (but rare) times.

Slap-dash training ensues enough that I can manage well enough on register or locating inventory etc.

Great, fabulous, strange to be officially working at a store where I have been going in the backroom and main office of for about 3 years! lol

Problem being is I haven't gotten paid yet. I started 6 weeks ago this Thursday. Problem? You betcha!
When I did a "hey, I haven't gotten paid yet and I see no evidence of a paycheck" on the last payday, one of the managers fired off an email to HR/payroll person.
    Gave her my contact info.

Why don't you guess if I've heard anything.

    Go on, guess.

This email was sent a week and a half ago.

    Is that your final answer?

    Right, I've heard NOTHING.

I didn't work the weekend of Thanksgiving (wooot!) so today I called the acting GM and left a kind of nice, kind of bitchy vm (we have been able to joke around and pal around) that while it's fun to work there, please let me know what is going on because I will not be coming in this week if I'm not getting paid and this situation is not resolved or I do not hear that it is being resolved.

    I mean, REALLY!

That happened to us at my last job. It was going on 3 months (I know, I should have quit, but nooooooo one, would hire me; trust me I was turning in applications all over the place). I finally mentioned that I was going to the labor board. The following day, we all had big fat checks.

The thing is, generally I love this store. Few particular employees I have issues with (who are nearly all no longer working there). I don't want to cause major problems. So I'm willing to put up with more before I do something drastic like that - but it's good to know just in case. Still not thrilled about working tomorrow though.

My work is notorious for messing around with payroll.
People first pay doesn't arrive for six, eight weeks- they've paid things into the wrong account, taken tax for people who shouldn't pay tax...

It's amazing how they can manage, really.
