This is lovely.
Today I was going through my month end receipts from the scrap hauling I've bene doing and I noticed something very upsetting. The place I've been dealing with apparently has some very messed up scales.
In case anyone hasnt dealt with it the process is you drive across the scales on the way in, stopand get weighed. Go in offload the scrap and drive acroos the scales on the way out. Stop and get weighed again. In weight minus out weight is load weight. Theoretically out weight should be the same each time I go there. An 89 Dodge ram and a 200 lb human male.
Well goign over the recepits I noticed somethign the out weight on each ticket is absolutely totally different. The range between them is about 1500 pounds! Thats a fair bit of change coming out of my pocket when they read the truck that much high. I know I think some heavy thoughts but get real.
So I called the place up and asked about it. The guy on the other end gave me some speil about how their scales are calibrated and tested and certified by the state and county and blah blah blah. I ask for the owner or the other guy there I know and have dealt with but they are both not there. So going nowhere fast I call up the county recorder (who is responsible for such stuff) and ask about them. The person on the other end eventually coems back with they have not had their scales inspected for the past 2 years for some reason and should not be using them. They are also being moved to the front of the line for being inspected.
So now I am dealing with another scrap yard in the county which is up to date on their certifications and actually pays a smidge more on the ton for their stuff. Its a big corporate scrap yard instead of a local operator so they aren't quite as friendly and downhome in their attitude but you know what they have an honest scale and pay in cold cash so I can live with that.
