a guy came up to me and asked if i had any suggestions for an 11 year old muslim girl. no. he told me about some things he had gotten for her in the past, and most of them were muslim oriented but it wasn't necessary for this time. i directed him to newbery winners and pointed out lois lowry and said how she was pretty good, like the giver and number the stars...

as soon as "number the stars" came out of my mouth, it clicked that a book about jews would not go over well with a muslim family. the man kind of laughed and said that the girl would be okay with it, but her father was a different story.

I don't think that's a fair comment, unless you forgot to add the part of the conversation where you were told, "No books about Jewish people".

A lot of Muslims are very nice and...open minded isn't exactly the phrasing I wanted, but it'll have to do.

I would imagine an 11 year old Muslim girl would like the same gifts any 11 year old girl would want.

Just be sure to avoid "Hamlet" by Shakespeare, or anything by Sir Francis Bacon.

I never did like The Giver. Not sure why, but I just didn't care for it.

I also hated the Giver- but I really think a book about a Jewish family would NOT be offensive to a Muslim girl. Islam is actually the most tolerant of the three major religions if you only use the religion's holy book as a guide- in practice of course all three can be a different story from their texts of choice, but the Koran actually discusses tolerance of other religions.

Wonder why the person buying the present was so focused on her religion? I don't ask for a book for a six year old atheist when I'm buying for my niece XD

i guess i shouldve qualified that with "probably would not be a good idea." the guy even said that it would be fine with her, but it was her dad that was another story. i dont claim much knowledge of islam, but i would assume its the more extremist outlook on jews that causes issues.
