  • "You called in because of the weather? Oh come on, it's not that bad" - With pic

I live in Ontario, Canada and we're in the midst of a MAJOR storm, I'm talking more than a foot of snow through today.

I hate working saturdays. I usually bus home but the buses don't run that late on saturdays, my fiance said she did not want to risk coming to pick me up in these conditions so I called off.

    Simple right? Well...

I get a call from work, the guy I am talking to (not my supervisor but a supervisor) seems surprised that I called off and tells me, "Most people were able to make it in today despite the weather, it's not that bad if you just drive slow."

This is a photo of the street outside my house taken two hours ago:

Tell me, would you want to go out in THAT during rush hour???

My fiance didn't and I explained again to the supervisor I was speaking with why I called off. He backed off but didn't apologize to me or anything, he just said we'd deal with it next time I'm in.

My question is: They could look out the window and see the weather, why in blazes did they even question me in the first place??

I may end up getting fired over this but if that happens I won't shed a tear because I'm tired of dealing with this kind of stuff.

They want you to travel in that?!?! Are they insane, surely only those in essential jobs should be travelling when the snow is compacting onto the tarmac and ITS STILL SNOWING!
A PSA, if I may, as well as another.

Fuck 'em. Seriously. No job is worth your life. I'm guessing you work some kind of retail job? No way. Not worth it.

I live in Cincinnati and we have 16 inches at last count. Believe me, my area canNOt handle that much snow. They are actually ticketing people for being on the roads.

I was supposed to work today and I work in a call center. Thank god there are some home-based 3rd shift agents who could help. They were all very cool about us not being able to make it in.

Here is my street, this morning - aka about 5 inches ago.

              Oh my gosh! NO!!!

My gf's boss pulled the same spiel with her this morning...

She called (she travels more than an hour to work for GM training) when it opened and said "The roads are getting real bad, I don't think I can make it there. If I do, I doubt I will make it back."

              His response?

"Well. I need you here. So just get here."

              And he HUNG UP!
JB: Are you the grief counselor?
GC: Oh, God, it never ends.

I live in Ontario, too. I turned on the radio this morning for the latest report, and the weatherman just screamed, "White death! White death!"

Yeah, its bad. Bad by Canadian standards.

I had the day off today, but my manager went in. Last I spoke to her she was planning on telling our afternoon/evening guy not to come in.

They wanted you to come in with THAT type of weather?!! Those people are out of their fucking minds to even have the gall to "request" that you come in under those circumstances. Screw them!

I'm in Cleveland and we were told to leave early yesterday because the roads were getting bad. I have to make up the time, but who cares? And right now there's no way I could get out of my driveway even if I wanted to.

My last call center job? I was told to come in. I was stuck 150 miles away due to the weather, and the city where I worked was under a driving ban: unless you were a cop, snowplow or ambulance/firetruck, you were off the roads or you'd get a ticket. My jerk of a boss called me from the call center and told me to shut up and make the drive because he did. My response? "So I should tell your boss that you just ordered me to break the law?" He shut up. I left a short time after that.....

Yeah, that doesn't look pleasant to drive in. That being said, I wouldn't have a choice.

Last time I called out due to a snowstorm, I later found out I was the only person to do so that day. Everybody else who was scheduled made it in, including people who lived in the country and had to travel on rural roads. I live only a mile away from the store, maybe even less, and my drive is only on city streets, so it ended up looking like I pulled a sickie.

Earlier this winter, we had a modest snowfall on top of freezing rain, and the temperature then plummeted and we had high winds and thus pretty bad wind chills. I called work to see if everybody scheduled came in. They did, so I had to suck it up and go in.

One of my co-workers told me that day "It's funny how you thought we'd close and nobody would come in."

I was born and raised here, so I'm used to it but yeah - the hills are pretty crazy. People just cannot function here in the snow, it's just insane.

Banks, doctors offices, grocery stores, fast food places - all closed. Its been at least 20 years since that happened around here.

Ugh. This reminds me of the only truly debilitating snowstorm my city has had in my lifetime. I live in one of the two major cities in Saskatchewan. We got something insane like three feet of snow in less than half a day, then the temperature dropped to somewhere around -40.

That's the only time I remember the entire city being shut down, and we were back in action the next day.

I tell ya, Canadian prairie winters. You can hate 'em, or you can severely dislike them.
