  • Agreement with Customer over Checker's Attitude

Yesterday, a customer was waiting at one of the registers and the light was on. I couldn't remember who was in that register so I stepped in and started ringing her up.

The checker in that register came over and made a big deal about me checking on his number. If I step in for a checker, I don't usually sign them off, and this way, the checker can come back in the middle of an order and take over. I told the checker that I couldn't remember who was in the register and that the customer wanted to be rung up. He told me to sign him off next time.

The customer informed me that the checker shouldn't have acted the way he did in her presence since it wasn't acceptable. I fully agreed with her.

Seems to me, if he was so concerned about someone using his register under his number that he'd ....sign himself off before he stepped away from the register.

(Our registers automatically sign us off if there has been no activity for a set amount of time.)
you are = you're. not "your".

Instead of this cashier copping an attitude, perhaps management (which I am guessing is you?) should direct him to man the register while logged in and light on. Customers lose patience quickly and become VERY upset when cashiers just wander off. Don't know where this guy went, but in my experience it means he was a register or three over chatting.

I think you are probably aware, but for your own job security you should not ring under another checker's number. If he happened to pilfer from the register and then said he saw you on his register under his number when his drawer came up short, it would look bad.

I absolutely agree. I understand occasionally other people ringing up on my register when I'm on break, especially during busy times, but ideally that isn't the best solution. If that checker makes a mistake when they're running on your register, then you are blamed unless you can prove that you weren't on it at the time through time clocks and security tapes.

In some situations, that's unavoidable. For instance, sometimes I've had to step in for a checker when they needed to take a phone call and they were in the middle of an order or had a personal emergency.

Another situation is when their register freezes and I have the checker move to another register. I transfer the current customer's order to one of the service desk registers and finish out the order. Then I go reboot the frozen register. In that situation, I let the checker use my number since the checker's number is still in the frozen register and numbers can only be on one register at a time.
